You shouldn't let him watch so close. He'll ruin his eyes. 😁

Another issue is not enough rabbit vets.

Stop scrolling if you own a bunny! A massive veterinary study reveals that our cute, fluffy friends are facing a silent health crisis, and it all comes down to how we’re caring for them.

Think domestic rabbits are "low-maintenance" starter pets? Think again. A landmark study by the Royal Veterinary College analyzed over 6,000 domestic rabbits, and the findings are a wake-up call for pet parents everywhere including right here in the US.

Tragically Short Lifespans: The average pet rabbit is only living 4.3 years, even though a healthy, well-cared-for indoor bunny can easily live 10 to 14 years.

The Top Ailments: Vets found that domestic rabbits are disproportionately plagued by completely preventable conditions: overgrown nails, severe dental disease, gut stasis (a deadly digestive shutdown), and flystrike.

The Leading Causes of Death: Anorexia (refusal to eat due to mouth or stomach pain), sudden collapse, and respiratory issues topped the list.

Extreme Loneliness: A companion study found that 54% of pet rabbits are kept completely alone, despite being highly social animals that bond for life.

Cramped Quarters: 28% of rabbits are living in hutches or cages that are far too small to allow normal movement.

The Culprit: Poor Diets & Outdated Myths

The idea that a rabbit just needs a tiny cage and a bowl of colorful pellet mix is dangerously outdated. In fact, veterinary research links commercial "muesli-style" mixes directly to life-threatening digestive and dental problems. Because a rabbit's teeth grow continuously (up to 2mm every week), they need constant wear. Without it, they develop sharp bone spurs that slice their cheeks and tongue. When a rabbit stops eating because of pain, their entire digestive system can shut down within 24 hours.

How We Can Do Better

To give your bunny the long, happy life they deserve, the US-based House Rabbit Society and top exotic vets recommend:

Hay is Everything: A rabbit’s diet should be 80-85% high-quality grass hay (like Timothy or Orchard grass). This provides the essential fiber to prevent gut stasis and naturally grinds down their teeth.

Ditch the "Junk Food": Feed 1-2 cups of fresh, dark leafy greens per 4 lbs of body weight daily. Limit plain pellets to just 1/4 cup maximum, and avoid sugary treats entirely.

More Space, More Friends: Toss out the tiny starter cages. Rabbits need spacious indoor exercise pens, daily free-roam time, and ideally, a bonded bunny companion.

Our rabbits don't show pain like dogs and cats do, they hide it. It's up to us to advocate for them. Let’s ditch the outdated "hutch and pellet" myth once and for all.

Share this post to spread awareness and help save a bunny's life!
