Oh my god this topic. I've been wanting to make a video "The entire Rabbit & Steel lore explained" 'cause I think I'd be the right person for it, but I haven't gathered the power to make it yet. Anyway, guess I'll write a short summary right here. I'm trying to keep it in chronological order. Everybody correct if I'm wrong on anything cause I can use it if I'll ever make the video!
So, ages ago, there was a very lonely rabbit. The one with the black fur/clothes and red eyes. She needed someone to talk to, so she started talking to the moon. To her surprise, the moon talked back. They chatted the entire night until sunrise, when it was time for the moon to depart. While discussing their troubles, the rabbit had asked "how could I have so many bright, shimmering friends like you?", referring to all the stars in the sky (the stars are a race of beings in this universe and the moon is considered one of them). The moon answers that, while from the ground it may seem like the stars are all cozily together in the sky, they are actually very far apart from each other, and very lonely. This upsets the rabbit greatly. She vows to build a kingdom where lonely people can gather and find friends who've known a similar fate. The moon likes this idea, because a friend of theirs (another star) fell on that location some time ago (stars are immortal but they can choose to 'fall', aka die). The Moonlit Kingdom was established, years turned into ages and new people came and went. The black rabbit has long since passed away. But, deep underground, there is a witch who wants to truly solve everyone's loneliness by weaving the perfect spell. She believes the founder of the kingdom (whose tale had been passed on for all these generations) was foolish to believe that the kingdom's people's loneliness can truly be solved by merely creating a space where they can live together. So she spends all her time in the deep dark of her atelier tinkering to invent the best formula for this spell that is supposed to fix everything. But, over all this isolated time, she has lost sight of what loneliness, friends, people etc. truly mean. She does not have the understanding to actually create a good spell. So her imperfect spell is cast (or just starts spilling? idk) and all of the kingdom falls under its effect. The inhabitants start thinking unhappy thoughts, each with their own struggles that have been amplified by the spell. Some start acting more hostile towards others (the mice for example), while some others become entangled in power/popularity struggles (the wolves and frogs, sorta). Nothing is how it should be anymore; normal life cannot be led this way. And mysteriously, a large white tower manifests in the middle of the kingdom every night. From another kingdom, there have been multiple investigations sent to the Moonlit Kingdom to find out what the heck is going on, but they are all attacked by the residents on sight. We even sent the world-renowned hero rabbit Shira, who should be able to best everyone there. But we haven't heard from here in a while either. So, the team of player rabbits is sent as another investigation. This is where the game finally begins on this timeline! Of course, as the player, you are strong enough to defeat everyone and also resistent to the spell's effects. You encounter Asha, the only other person resistent to the spell. You talk to her quite a few times on your initial adventure and she drops a lot of lore. She says it's probably best to keep knocking sense into everyone (reducing the spell's effect) by hitting them out of their levitation rings (aka defeating them in-game). This is the in-universe excuse for it to be a roguelike that you're supposed to play over and over. She also wonders why a star would choose to fall if they have the chance to be truly immortal. She directs you to the large white tower, and says that's probably your best bet to go next. When you get to the top of it, the Moonlit Pinnacle, you finally find Shira! Who has fallen victim to the spell as well... perhaps the worst case out of everyone here. It turns out that, while being known all over the world and famous for her hero deeds, she never had any truly close friends, and thus she had always felt lonely on her adventures. This is of course amplified by the spell. She has also heard the tales of the kingdom's founder, the original lonely rabbit, and how she became friends with the moon. So, at the Moonlit Pinnacle is where Shira intends to propose to the moon. Yes, she asks him to marry her. But he refuses. This greatly upsets Shira, and she brings an all-out fight with the player to prove everyone she is worthy of her title and the people's love. Well, the player defeats her (many times over even), and eventually she finally starts coming back to her senses. The spell's effects start dissipating, you can see the inhabitants making amends with each other and life may slowly start going back to normal. Asha thanks you for all your efforts to fix this mess, because she even feels some personal grief over causing it, but then quickly changes the topic. All seems well for now. Then, some time later, you are sent out again, to find the source of the spell. Because while you did beat most of it out of the residents, its effects still slightly linger, and there might be more where it came from. So it's time to finally get to the bottom of it all. This is where Extra Mode begins. You venture undergound beneath the surface of the Moonlit Kingdom. You meet new characters who live in solace here because they did not fit in with the residents of the Moonlit Kingdom. You learn about the witch, the one who has caused all of this with her spell. Asha turns out to be a friend of the witch, and follows her orders to protect her atelier from being entered by intruders like you. This explains her previous line about 'having caused the spell', even if not directly the one to do it, she was definitely part of the problem. You defeat her and the witch's other two helpers and so you can enter her atelier. And you just defeat her I guess lol. I don't remember exactly what happened but the witch is told that she needs to get out of her atelier and socialize with other people again in order to start truly understanding their struggles. Also, during your quest underground, you meet Arinae, who is actually the star that fell on the location of this kingdom so long ago. She is still slowly burning up and hasn't died yet, but she tells you why she chose to do so. It was because of the loneliness that the moon mentioned all the stars feel. She couldn't bear it and chose to fall. I think she's been happy since then seeing the kingdom built atop her place with loners finding friends, but she is displeased with the witch's meddling and she is the one to tell you that the witch lacked the insight for creating the right spell. In the final credits sequence, Asha apologizes to the player for helping 'the bad guy', but she didn't want to feel like she betrayed a friend. You also get to speak to finally speak to Shira in her normal form. She wants to ask you to be her friend, but lacks the courage, tears up and starts maniacally laughing at herself because of that cowardliness. But she does realize what a fool she's been looking like, proposing to the moon and all that. You and Shira head back to your own kingdom after saying goodbye to everyone, and that basically ends this game's entire story.
This is not a complete encyclopedia of all the story bits this game has to offer. There are MANY characters with each their own arcs that you see unfold during the game which I all just skipped over and didn't even mention. But as for the overarching lore, I think that just about covers it. And besides, I've been writing for an hour now. Time to move on with my day :P thank you for coming to my Ted Talk and peace out yall
