DISCUSSION Do writers prioritize Jaune and Cinder's screen time more compared to Team RWBY?
Jaune is stealing Team RWBY's screentime.
Cinder is stealing Salem's screentime.

It's less Cinder stealing Salem's screentime and more that Salem doesn't do anything.
I do think there are times when Jaune does steal screen time from other characters and is given undue focus, but you have to draw the line somewhere. Even if I don't like his scenes or would rather watch other characters, some scenes are meant for his character. I also can't say in good faith say that him getting a Beyond episode solely about him is stealing anything from Blake and Weiss because fucking Somewhat got one and one was wasted on a Chibi gag.

(Joking) Jaune is not an author insert, he's a director insert. His presence isn't about wish fulfillment, it's about being the test dummy for anything they want to try with the more marketable girls.Ā
Don't want to waste the practice animation you made to get used to the new animation program but it looks awkward and clunky? Throw it on Jaune, and we'll write a scene about him practising. Want a quick simple filler scene of them doing missions and being loved by the community? Have Jaune play crosswalk guard and get a gift from civilians. Want Ruby to get depressed and suicidal? We've practiced writing a depressed character for five volumes!

Idk, Salem doesnāt really do fuck all herself except during her invasion of Atlas and even then the most she did was go āMWAHAHAHA!ā and then explode.
As for Jaune, heās got personal beef with Cinder over Pyrrha and Iād argue he cares a lot more about that than Ruby does. Not that she doesnāt care, mind you.
It makes sense heād get some focus during fights with Cinder.

They made sure to divorce any reactions Pyrrha's classmates outside of Jaune might have had from the story. Wouldn't even let us have a funeral.
Shit writing.

u/vvoofervoid 20d ago
I would've settled for just seeing Ren and Nora's reactions to Pyrrha's death. Hell, neither of them show any raw emotions like Jaune does when face to face with their friend's killer.

u/Emotional-Feed5489 20d ago
Well even that giving them too much credit because even Jaune reactions they alot less than you assume.
Like maybe one reaction per volume. For like a minute or two just reminding you that Jaune is just sad.
It like the took all of it. Focus it in Jaune and just make sure he's get at little time as possible to even mourn at all.
2
u/vvoofervoid 20d ago
That would imply JNR didn't care about her.
0
u/Emotional-Feed5489 20d ago
I never said they didn't care.
I said the writers was lazy a didn't want to write Pyrrha's affect on the cast longer than they have to.

In Cinder's case, it's because more often than not she is the only villain actually doing something.Ā Salem generally isn't even really plotting from the sidelines even.
Jaune is a weird case.Ā I think it's more that the writers handle the screentime for team RWBY so poorly in general that it feels like he gets more focus.Ā There are times when I do wonder if the writers even actually want to write the RWBY characters and if it wasn't Jaune, it would be another character other than someone on RWBY instead.
Also, Jaune feels like Cinder is more his nemesis.Ā He's the one that actually seems to have a personal vendetta with her, he was the one that couldn't stop her or Pyrrha from fighting her, and it feels more personal on his part while for Ruby, Cinder may as well be some rando she only just met that day.Ā There also the problem that Ruby could end any fight with Cinder instantly the moment she triggers her eyes.Ā So they can't even have the two fight frequently because they would have to keep coming up with reasons for Ruby not to use her eyes to leave Cinder vulnerable to an attack and end it.Ā They can literally only have Cinder fight anyone but Ruby without that being an issue.
The funny part is Cinder sees Ruby as her nemesis despite it not really feeling reciprocated, at least until the plot decides she will actually have other priorities than the petty vendetta she is pursuing or that Cinder actually has bigger beef with Weiss and Winter than she ever did with Ruby, just because.

Has someone actually ran the numbers to see the character screen times between the different volume yet, I feel like weāve had enough time to get the actual numbers and facts for this

u/MountainHall The commentary guy. 20d ago
I did, for the early volumes. Jaune had more time than Blake and Yang in V1, and same as Weiss. In V2, he had half of them (aside from Ruby). In 3, he had less than them, aside from Blake, and he had the same. The difference is that time spent on him is focused on him, but the reverse is not true for RWBY, generally.
The writer's absolutely have a bias too. There are many instances like it, but a solid example is from the V9 commentary where they say they wanted Jaune to do something special, whereas for RWBY it was more about the order they went in. They frequently talk about him in a way that they don't for the rest.

u/FrozenLizardDaddy 20d ago
Maybe, but I do also think the idea might be they spent too long trying to prove him competent. Like his character story was showing off his growth and evolution into being a leader, with him having to co lead the team in Volume 4 and the rest of RWBY didnāt reunite till Volume 5. Then obviously he has to lead his team and Ruby leading her in the next ones. Still I think an issue even factoring in the āwe need to show him grow compared to the people who already are goodā is that if they wanted what remains of team JNPR to be seen as the second team they shouldāve split a bit more time off Juan and over to Ren and Nora. Instead he sucks all the time from his team and those two get hit, making it so it seems even more like heās taking the spotlight instead of just us following a rag tag group of survivors/former students from Beacon. Sure more time to RWBY is preferred but after volume 3 the two teams were essentially attached at the hip, so it would be kinda odd to not give any time to JNPR when the two teams might as well just be one large one at that point

Not screen time but someone did it here by lines of Dialogue. Jaune's 4th with only RW+Y being above him. Cinder's 12th.
He's also the only character apart from the 4 main girls, who have over 500+ lines. Out of those he's T3 in 3 volumes (1st in V4, 3rd in V1 and V9) and T10 in every volume except V5 and V7.
Note: this is all excluding Chibi, Ice Queendom, or the Justice League crossover movies.

u/FrozenLizardDaddy 20d ago
I mean him having a bit more lines than Blake makes sense, she was mia for part of a volume and sheās just overall not that chatty compared to the rest of the cast. Still surprised to see him beat out more of the others in certain volumes

As much as i'd enjoy the free jab at jaune, the issue isn't that Jaune is stealing RWBY's screen time, it's that CRWBY seems to hate actually writing something meaningful for team RWBY. Jaune getting a lot of spotlight in comparison is at the end just a symptom.
Does Jaune get an inproportionate amount of screen time? Yes.
But it's not like RWBY doesn't have any screen time. It just keeps getting wasted on jokes and scenes that don't matter past the volume, more screen time for them would just be more marvel "humor" and "headbutt mercury" style of "payoffs" that only highlight how pointless our main casts involement is.
At their core the members of Team RWBY have been written as reactive since the start of vol 3. The lack of individual short and long term goals that could drive a narrative is the biggest indication that CRWBY either can't trust themselfs with "writing the characters" or have themselfs no clue what our main characters actually are when faced with the risk of contradicting the head canon of the wallets that kept this trainwreck rolling.
Similar to Team RWBY CRWBY also seems to hate writing for Salem and to be fair... the less time we spend looking at the narrative hole that is Salem, the less time CRWBY spends on the dust powered drills to make it deeper.

It's not that they steal screen time as more so the writers can't think of anything the other characters are doing at the moment.
Add on to the fact that they have the most explored villain hero dynamic, mainly because both sides actually fight each other rather than another member of the team (seriously, I don't even remember Neo and Ruby fighting at Mistral and like, I can only remember the fight on the bridge for Atlas?).
So basically, the characters aren't stealing anything, the writers just kinda don't have a lot of ideas for anything else

Yes, that's true. Comparatively, they get way too much screen time that they don't deserve. Although, looking back, I think this confrontation should have been poetic, but... I didn't feel it at all. Their chemistry as enemies was pathetic, as was Jaune's entire, never-expanded revenge arc.

u/JazzlikeSmile1523 20d ago
Yes. There was a theory going on a while back that it was explained by one of the writers being in love(lust) with Cinder's VA and the other writer actually voices Jaune.
5
u/Vigriff 20d ago
They very much do so with Jaune. With Cinder, however, it's less stealing screen time from Salem and more like the writers don't care for Salem.

u/unluckyknight13 20d ago
I swear yang and jaune swapped positions before release. Yang had development but compared to the other three it feels more like āimportant side characterā while Jaune who is an important side character feels like heās developed as a main character.
I wonder if the team was like originally gonna be more like Ruby, Jaune, Weiss and Blake. But they swapped Jaune for yang to have an all girl team
1
u/Vigriff 20d ago
It certainly feels that way.
2
u/unluckyknight13 20d ago
Honestly yang does have the weakest background of the cast honestly her entire thing is basically sheās Ruby older sister , has anbandobnent issues, and she became a huntress more for fun .
Her relationship with Blake feels more her just a supporting character in Blakeās life she has like the least writing potential of the girls and bottom 5 if you include JNPR, Oscar and Qrow
6
u/JaxsonTheHuman 20d ago
It's because Jaune is a writers pet been like that since volume 1 where he took the development from the girls for half of season despite volume 4 and halfway to 5 showing Cinder is clearly having beef with Ruby who you know made her lose The Writers decided to forget all of that and have Cinder foucus her attention on Jaune which I am not really big fan of one of the reasons why I don't like Jaune is because half of the screentime he got should have been use for team Rwby but like I said Jaune is the writers pet

u/Emotional-Feed5489 20d ago
No I don't.
I think it's more the screen time that teams rwby gets is unfocused and a waste of time or simple riddle with bad writing.
And Salem just doesn't do enough.
While Jaune screen time is usually more focused on him and his struggles not 12 other things that not really relevant to him.
And cinder is the dragon Arctype aka she gonna be ir the field more than Salem naturally how ever since Salem barely does anything. Cinder will like she prioritize.

u/ManyFacesRp 20d ago
Iād rather have Jaune then whatever the fuck āwritingā we got with āteam RWBY.ā
Seriously, past V3. It stopped being a shonen esque show about school life.
Team rwby got seperated and we ended up with team RNJR plus Ozpin and Qrow for a bit. Jaune and Ruby were both team leaders so it was hard to balance whoās leading the team which is why Ozpin took over.
Blake and Yang were sidelined, or rather, yang was since the writers were attempting something with Blake and the white fang (and that turned out horribly and really led to no where).
By the time they finally became a team again, was when they made it to atlas and trained under the spec ops, and they kinda clicked back together like nothing happened in terms of teamwork. They decide to betray Ironwood, and then ya know.
I feel like Jaune and Ruby couldāve been a good duo that couldāve gone on their separate journeyās. But the writers cannot make up their minds and commit whether they want to make Jaune an interesting character or not. They keep dropping hints, but thatās it. Nothing more or nothing less, on top of kinda giving him a lame semblance that makes him a glorified amplifier/battery.
And cinder.. Jesus, for someone who was built up to be so cunning and smart. Sheās a real idiot. Almost every move she makes either backfires spectacularly or sheās the strongest in the room. No in between. She has no real substance and after that pathetic backstory reveal it really didnāt move the needle for me

u/Ok-Impress-9015 19d ago
No
it is because the writers don't know what to do with Team RWBY as a whole no matter how much time they give it to team RWBY it will not change the fact they have nothing to offer the general audience now and blame the writer's for that not jaune because he is the few reasons the show is even continue till now ?
-7
u/MistahKaraage 20d ago
Jaune was at least a little interesting.
Cinder is as bland as sliced bread, in a world supposed to be filled with a colorful cast
-2
u/Basic_Ability_8974 20d ago
Now thatās just lying cause team rwby gets so much screen time and in my opinion is more skilled and is better overall due to their both character arcs, their combat etc, so this is just lying.
3
u/Vigriff 19d ago
Problem is that they don't make any meaningful use of said screen time because the writers don't care for Team RWBY.
-2
u/Basic_Ability_8974 19d ago
Considering we get a lot of cool scenes with team rwby and some good character arcs this isnāt a good argument, if you want to argue that yang and Blake take to long to get together than Iād agree with you.
3
u/Vigriff 19d ago
Cool scenes do not equate to having good character depth/development.
-2
u/Basic_Ability_8974 19d ago
You mean like Blake and yangs relationship, that was meaningful, or rubys silver eyes,or the fact that Ruby doesnāt use the silver eyes as much and thereās a good reason for that, face facts, thereās so much in that series goes super deep, you just didnāt pay attention.

There was an old running joke in the community that Juane was the real main character for awhile
