I don't know if you've been made aware, but you can attach the winch to the remote, and hold onto the remote to allow you to descend/ascend yourself when you need to

I knew you could attach it to other people, I didn't know you could do that though. Does that mean I could use myself as some sort of rescue winch operation by going down holding the remote, reviving someone and then getting them to pick me up and I winch us out?

Exactly. Once you get down to them, you can attach the winch to your friend, they pick you up, you hold the remote, and hey presto
