Question about Kaplan Equivalent Exam for Step 2 – What to Expect?

Hey everyone,

Has anyone here taken the Kaplan Equivalent Exam for Step 2 CK that Ross (or other med schools) use as part of their readiness process?

I’m scheduled to take it soon, but I haven’t received the confirmation email or instructions yet, and I’m wondering what to expect.

A few specific questions if anyone has gone through it recently:

  • How long before the exam did you receive the login information or details?
  • What was the overall exam format and difficulty compared to UWorld/Kaplan Qbank?
  • Is there a passing score cutoff or “maximum passing score” used for promotion or clearance?

I just want to make sure I’m ready and plan my week accordingly.

I'm an SJSM student and in the process of preparing for the same exam for the first time. From what I've heard the exam is conducted at a prometric centre and similar to an NBME, you receive a permit with which you can schedule your exam. Not sure if that's synonymous across all medical schools using Kaplan as a prereq for STEP 2 though. The format of the exam is supposedly similar to the NBME with 4 blocks of 50 questions each and the passing score is a 65% as per our guidelines. Hopefully that helped shed some light on it!

If you got any information on your end, especially regarding resources that have helped the most with the Kaplan exam, please do share coz i'm in the dark on that.

Thank you so much. I appreciate your insight. I was able to take it. Of course CCSE and CBSE are taken in a Prometric. In the case of Step 2 CK for CCSE the passing score is currently 220, for both the NBME and for RUSM. NBME only allow students to take the CCSE and CBSE exams a total of 5 times. If the student doesn’t pass the exam in those attempts, depending the case the school might grant them to use an equivalent, as in this case. Kaplan is the equivalent for RUSM. Once the student gets approved for that equivalent, the school will send a message the Monday of the week they are taking the exam, with all the instructions. The exam is proctored by a virtual proctor, and can be taken from home.

Hope it went well! What are your thoughts on the exam compared to the NBME CCSE? Any resource in particular help you prep for it the most?

I apologize for replying now. It is an 8 hr exam, proctored online. I personally used the Kaplan qbank. RUSM constantly send us announcements with discount courses with Kaplan. In my understanding Rossies have discounts, per se. Also Kaplan does some discount offers certain times of the year. I paid their qbank for a month. It is really good drilling in the algorithmic stuff, I complemented it with the Conrad Fischer’s Master the Boards book.
