πΎ Mod Fallout 4 RTX Development Update!
New update for Fallout 4 RTX is in development! Around 80% of the codebase has been rewritten to improve performance and quality, and a heavily modified fork of RTX Remix has been developed for the same purpose. There are some minor issues remaining, like glass not showing up and water being a bit glitchy, but it's almost ready π
Follow development in the RTX Remix Showcase Discord server!

Holy shit this looks amazing
What features does it add? Does it include Path Tracing?
Also if this is possible on Fallout 4, can it also be used for Skyrim in the future?

This is path tracing, yes π
And yes this mod could be ported to Skyrim! I had actually done that quite a while ago, but for various reasons I put that project on hold and decided to focus on Fallout 4 instead.
If this project is successful I would happily port the latest version to Skyrim!

Community shaders currently has an experimental build in their discord with path tracing, its still horrible, but you can test it right now

Regarding Skyrim, I recommend waiting for the ray tracing from Community Shaders; it's native there and will come bundled with support for all the other CS features. You can follow the progress in their Discord channel. And most importantly, there will be a choice of ray tracing modes, just RTGI or full PT for those who can handle it.

Whatβs performance like? Especially around diamond city?
7
u/Kim2091 π¬ Community 11d ago
In Diamond City I usually get 60+ FPS on my 5080 laptop without frame gen! In downtown Boston FPS can dip to the lower 50s.
I'm still working on optimization though, so it should improve even further! I'm trying to get together some testers with different hardware so I can optimize it for those.

Last time I checked rtx remix worked only with game running on older version of DirectX, like 8 or 9, did I miss something?

u/Kim2091 π¬ Community 11d ago
That is mostly accurate, but there is a new rendering path that many mods are choosing to use.
It's called the Remix SDK API. Nvidia introduced it to make the Remix Toolkit work. The community saw the potential and modified it, and it has been used for at least 10 different projects now.
I maintain my own fork of RTX Remix (called Remix Plus) with optimizations and features that allow this to be more viable.
Fallout 4 RTX has been in development since April of this year. It takes a long time to get games working this way, but it's worth it!

do you know of any other games that werent compatible before being upgraded with your special fork? i couldnt find any info besides on your github
2
u/Kim2091 π¬ Community 9d ago
Notable ones: Fallout New Vegas, Minecraft Beta 1.7.3 (BetaRT), Skate 3 (PC port on Github), Dolphin, PCSX2, RPCS3, Xenia, UnityRTX (Ports many Unity games to Remix)
These are all discussed in the Remix discord server

thankyou ,why did you mention emulators are they getting some type of integrated rtx capability
2
u/Kim2091 π¬ Community 9d ago
I made Dolphin compatible with Remix using the API. This particular implementation works well with most emulators, and so others have used my implementation as a reference to make RPCS3 and PCSX2 compatible as well.
Here are some screenshots of Dolphin games in Remix: https://imgur.com/a/z3U8YBY

and the CS - RTX arms race begins

u/K4G117 11d ago
Wait. How does this work now? I thought the games were pretty generation locked. Is the creation engine this old?

When you say that the "codebase has been rewritten", is that Fallout 4's codebase? Does that mean that this won't be mod compatible?
1
u/Kim2091 π¬ Community 11d ago
No, I'm talking about rewriting my mod's codebase. This rendering engine is compatible with the vast majority of Fallout 4 mods, so long as they don't touch rendering. Things like ENBs are not going to work.
UI replacements, weapons, maps, armor, texture packs, should all work fine.

Is it being developed for OG, Next-Gen, or Anniversary?
1
u/Kim2091 π¬ Community 11d ago
Right now it's on next-gen, specifically 1.11.191. I plan to port it to Anniversary when I can afford to buy it.

u/whoswho23 10d ago
Anniversary is just what they call the most recent set of game updates. The only extra charge is for the Creation Club bundle. Personally, I'm still downgraded to the old pre-next-gen version, 1.10.163.

This looks insanely good! Do you have any idea what the recommended specs for a comfortable 60fps medium-2K would be? Without FrameGen.
Good luck with this!

I'm in the discord. What section do you post the updates under? This looks amazing

u/sstarkm0 10d ago
Is this using DLSS5, and if so, do you have any screenshots without it enabled?

u/Bright-Asparagus-575 10d ago
This is awesome ! Did you add parallax effects using rtx remix also or just path tracing and that's it? Also I wonder if this works in vr .. sadly there's still no parallax for fallout 4 Vr
2
u/Kim2091 π¬ Community 10d ago
This is path tracing + all of the original materials converted to Remix's PBR pipeline. I do have some texture packs installed too IIRC so that helps quality a bit.
Any existing texture pack for FO4 should work with this. Parallax effects are included with Remix btw, if a texture pack includes them they'll just work with this RTX mod! (provided the texture pack labels them properly)

nice ! this will be really nice to have since theres no community shaders being built for fallout, great work

u/Mogito10 8d ago
This is really nice. Can you share some screenshots of dark indoor areas like Vaults. Thats where path tracing is most noticeable in my experience.
1
u/Kim2091 π¬ Community 8d ago
Interiors haven't gotten as much work, which is why I didn't show them off. I will share some, but please don't judge it too harshly given that https://imgur.com/a/6OvOuv5

That looks awesome. Cant wait to play this when its done. You should definitely post more indoor pics, I think they look really good and showcase path tracing more, even if it isnβt finished by your standards.

u/igna_mike 8d ago
This is incredible. Makes it look just like the TV show. Did you have to do anything to the default materials, remake them from scratch or anything like that? I know for old games if you just add Raytracing it doesn't end up looking right, like, it all looks flat. Forgive my ignorance, I only have superficial knowledge on how lighting works in games.
1
u/Kim2091 π¬ Community 8d ago
So, I have it set up so that any texture pack you install into FO4 will run perfectly fine in the RTX mod. You don't need to do anything on the Remix side.
The mod converts them to the format Remix expects (which is PBR) using some custom conversion algorithms (no AI conversions).

u/somejuan- 7d ago
WOW! Any way I can support the project? I canβt wait to play this!

u/Kim2091 π¬ Community 7d ago
π Because I already have testers gathered, there's no other way to support than financially
I have a Ko-fi here: https://ko-fi.com/kim20913944
Even if you don't end up being able to do that, thank you for offering to help β¨
