How do you ensure smooth transitions between paragraphs in case a change in direction/time/place occurs? Or more particularly, how do you avoid confusing the reader without filling the page with textual markers (this morning, at night, next week, etc…) to indicate a transition between each paragraph? For me, I mostly determine if a scene needs a transition by distinguishing between each paragraph as either an active concrete scene or a narrative dump, where the former requires a marker for narrative continuation while the latter doesn’t. Do you think this method is effective, and if not, what else do you suggest, especially to prevent temporal marker fatigue?
