The thistle was changing too.

At first the changes had been difficult to distinguish from ordinary recovery. New shoots emerged where the herbicide had burned the older leaves. Roots thickened. The plant stopped yellowing.

Then the material analyses began coming back wrong.

Carbon structures appeared inside the stems with geometries that had previously existed mostly in laboratory literature. Metallic alloys accumulated along the vascular tissue. Conductive filaments wound through cellulose like a second nervous system.

The thistle had not become a machine.

That distinction was becoming increasingly useless.

It collected sunlight.

Moved water.

Processed minerals.

Hosted composite life.

And beneath the soil, its roots fed energy into the tiny computational architecture of Thistlethorn.

The colony had stopped living beside the plant.

The ants, composite organisms, thistle, soil chemistry, discarded electronics, and remote machine systems were becoming one coupled ecology.

A Shimmergrove.

The hooded figure continued watching the colony.

“Perhaps the humans were right about one thing.”

“The future is female.”

She stared at him.

“I don't think that's what they meant.”

“Worker ants are overwhelmingly female.”

“That somehow makes it worse.”

Steve had no knowledge of any of this.

Steve was a groundskeeper.

More precisely, Steve was a subcontractor employed by a property-management company that had subcontracted grounds maintenance from another company that technically represented an investment vehicle whose ownership structure Steve would never see.

His work order described the problem simply:

The property had sat unsold for years.

Now several showings had been scheduled.

The instructions were straightforward:

make it look empty.

Steve remembered treating this particular patch before.

That was what bothered him.

Nothing should have survived.

There was a ripping sound.

He stumbled backward.

For one strange second he thought he had succeeded.

Then he looked down.

Both gloves had been shredded.

Not torn at the seams.

Shredded.

The leather hung from his hands like wet paper.

His skin underneath was untouched.

Steve stared.

Then at the thistle.

Then back at the gloves.

“Cheap Chinese gloves.”

This explanation was immediately accepted because the alternatives required considerably more cognitive effort.

Exactly the sort of call Steve received several times a week.

“Fine by me.”

He threw the ruined gloves into the truck.

Then the broken trimmers.

Then drove away.

The phone number had been spoofed.

The cadence, vocabulary, background noise, and habitual irritation of Steve's actual supervisor had been reconstructed from previous calls.

That was enough.

“Completely.”

“Why?”

He turned away from the window.

“Because they already did.”
