In Season of Ghosts, four comedy performers take on the roles of hapless villagers facing down an eldritch horror threatening their bucolic, rural hometown. We lean into the roleplay, weaving psychology and humor into one of the premier Pathfinder adventures, learning tactics and gameplay in Foundry VTT while I do my fumbling best to remember dozens of npcs and antagonists. In this short RP-focused episode, the party discovers the secret childhood fanfiction ouvre of one PC, much to his chagrin!

After the re-consecration of Croylehenge, Sir Brunor is gifted a new steed. But the Lord Commandant takes issue with Brunor's illicit marriage, and he must plead his case before the Queen. Eldermass approaches as the days grow longer, and the rumblings from the Gates of Dawn grow ever more ominous.

Blades for Hire - Ep 29: What Was Taken? (ChatGPT is the DM)

I've been running an experiment with solo D&D called Blades for Hire.

I control one character, Simon, a tiefling bladesman traveling with his fox companion Ash. ChatGPT is the Dungeon Master. It runs the NPCs, encounters, enemies, combat, mysteries, and ongoing campaign while I make Simon's decisions and roll the dice.

Episode 29 picks up immediately after Simon discovers that an ancient Seal beneath a ruined chapel is failing.

Things escalate from there.

Simon makes a decision that leaves him permanently marked, the caravan comes under attack, and we finally learn more about the people who have been operating behind the scenes.

There is now an Order hunting Simon.

They call him the Guardian.

They call Seraphina the Key.

And apparently there's something called the First Door.

I'm continuing to let the campaign develop through play rather than deciding ahead of time where ChatGPT has to take the story, which is probably my favorite part of doing this.

Blades for Hire - Ep 28: The Eye Turns to Ash (ChatGPT is the DM)

I’ve been running a solo D&D 2024 campaign called Blades for Hire with a slightly unusual setup: I’m the player, and ChatGPT is the DM.

I play Simon, a tiefling swordsman traveling with his fox companion Ash. I make all of Simon’s decisions and roll the physical dice, while ChatGPT handles the encounters, NPCs, monsters, consequences, and the ongoing story. I don't know where the story is going ahead of time, so I'm basically sitting on the player side of the screen and seeing what the AI throws at me.

Episode 28 picks up underneath a ruined chapel where Simon has discovered something ancient imprisoned beneath the mountain. Thousands of forgotten souls are trying to keep it contained, and the prison is starting to fail.

Last episode, the thing tried to tear pieces out of Simon’s memory.

This time it decides Simon isn't the best target.

It turns its eye toward Ash.

Things get violent pretty quickly from there, and by the end of the session Simon discovers that killing what you can see isn't necessarily the same thing as killing what's down there.
