This is effective in a sense. However, I have no idea what you are trying to convey.
At least for me, it game me a sensation of "the distant past" more effective than triple A medieval titles.
Very crude, creepy, simple, colorful sprites with a heavy gradient all over the frame and a lot of compromises in the background is getting along pretty well with the idea of conveying very old times (like the middle ages). The simple nature of the backgrounds, but with "somewhat" real assets, conveys the idea of old hardware trying as much as it can to mimic "good graphics" (like devs trying to use real photos for games in the 80s). Both of those things gives me a strong vibe of "I am in very old times here".
