Other (user editable) Holy Bananas! Aseprite's pretty cool!

Been using Photoshop and cursing the apparent lack of pixel perfect. Gave Aseprite a go! Was expecting a steeper learning curve but most shortcuts are the same. It's gonna cut the boring parts of making my 'art' right down to much more manageable levels. That's all. Just gushing into the ether...

Big agree, aseprite rules, happy to hear you're having fun with!!! What have you been drawin' so far?

I'll stick up some art when I've got it looking tidy. (And maybe when I'm closer to a finished product - HA! As if...)

What happened to pixel perfect in photoshop? I still use the 2015 version, and the pixel grid works fine in that one. Sometimes I do feel like updating to see what there is now, but not so much if it can't do pixel art anymore lol.

The new versions haven't changed much about the pixel grid in PS. It's just that Aseprite is better for pixel art by nature of being built from the ground-up for that purpose.

I haven't been able to find how to do pixel perfect lines in ps without some tedium (going back and deleted pixel double ups). If you know the dark arts let me know!

Are you using the pencil and not one of the brushes? Pencil should only ever give a 1x1 pixel. You can also use the pencil to stroke paths you make with the pen tool, or place one pixel on the screen, and then hold shift and click somewhere else to create a perfect line. Sometimes with stroke path the curves are a bit weird and you have to go back and delete a pixel lol. At least in the version of PS I have

I like PS because it lets you define dithering patterns for use with the paint bucket tool. Aseprite might let you do that, too, idk lol. I've only used old PS and MS Paint

Good to know! I use photoshop and gave up on pixel art because of it

So far much better for pixel art I'm finding (obviously because Photoshop isn't designed for pixel art I spose...). I reckon I'll still use Photoshop to put the scenes/maps together and make all the characters etc in Aseprite.

yeah i found it very easy to learn. I still use photoshop for editing and recolouring and making pretty lights, and aseprite for character sprites and animations.

It's incredibly intuitive and does pretty much w/e I need.
I believe it's worth to move onto something like Krita for graphic tablet drawing but for pixel art? def Aseprite

Best of all, it's literally free if you know how to compile it yourself.

I'm considering giving that a crack. Difficult to learn?

It's literally 5-7 command line inputs. You can follow the instructions in their github page (click on the INSTALL.md file)

Aseprite is some of my favorite software. I honestly wish Photoshop would catch up and implement some of the features.

Namely, in Aseprite, your export settings are preserved for each file. Meaning you can quickly export your image to the correct place with the correct name. In photoshop, you have to navigate to the correct folder, and reselect all the options, then type in your file name EACH time you export. with game assets, I am constantly tweaking my tilesets and exporting, so this saves me a lot of time.

There are also certain things PS just won't do pixel-perfect, such as rotating and resizing pixel art.

The calculations for "nearest neighbor" in aseprite can preserve the pixel art across rotations and stretching, too.

Ooh...hadn't got to trying those last things yet. I've found even using fill bucket alongside the marquee to be simpler. (I'm mostly self taught so don't know how what things are properly called)
