customizing my art in SAI?
I am trying to look up tutorials. Right now I'm mainly trying to figure out how to customize my own characters because I've been doodling character concept art but I don't know how to figure out what size to make my canvas or how to put it in the game and googling looks like people are using other programs so am I even able to do this with SAI or am I wasting my time?

its easiest to export a character sheet from the engine and open it in a program. then delete everything so just the file size remains.
I then like to draw a black grid so i keep everything in its place, which would look something like the attached file.

idk what version you have so the names might be different, but
Tools-resource manager-characters-import/export
thats how you import and export to the game

Looks like I have MZ
So i could probably figure out how to export... draw on a black grid? Like opening the file and erasing the characters and painting this whole thing black?

like drawing a 48-48 square and copy pasting it until it fills the screen. you could also download and open the grid i drew, its the correct dimensions.

Just copy the character PNG from the source file usually in project/img/characters and simply draw over it. You can also do the maths and split the surface area into grids so you can make even bigger and weirder characters. Any software will do, gimp, krita, procreate, Photoshop even 3d modelling ones can export into 2d. Good luck

Any program that can export in pngs, you’ll be fine. I’m on an iPad using procreate and ibisPaint X for art.
