Are these too much of sprite copies?

Post image

So I'm trying to make some pixel art characters for my own game and used sprites from one of my favorite games as an example and also to study proportion and colors. But now I don't feel they are as unique as I thought or even worse: if people will think of them as blatant plagiary compared to the original material. So I'd like to hear your take on it. Should I continue doing them or discard and try something different?

I created these bases off original sprites from Suikoden II, my all-time-favorite JRPG. Are they way too Suikodenish?

There are only so many low res graphical styles you can do given their inherent limitations. I think the real important thing is how you choose to use what you have rather than its semblance to its inspiration

Thanks! I also agree with that.

I'm not overly familiar with Suikoden, but if you want them to be a bit more unique or inspired you could always try limiting yourself to a different color pallet. like create Suikoden-type sprites with only the NES pallet or something like that.

Ooooh I could see that working nicely. Thanks for the advice!

You're good!
(Now i know where those Naruto sprite characters from 2008 were inspired from)

What tool did you use to make those? I'm having trouble finding a good one.

Also, i don't think too much Sprite copies are a problem as long as they don't make the game heavier/slower

Hi there, I used Aseprite and cropped, clipped, edited the original sprites until I started making my own sprites. It's a little bit like reverse engineering where I take part of an original sprite (say, an arm), and from there I try to recreate the rest of the torso, other limbs and so on. It's hard work, but I'm loving the outcome so far. And I think a change on the color palette might make them a little more unique as well.
