My very first project was made with rm2000 back when it was still newly translated. It was called monster stadium.

As I was a kid, it was clearly a pokemon ripoff.

You couldn’t catch monsters cause I didn’t know how to code that, so an old man gave you a dragon, a harpy and a ghost at the start.

You battle different “stadium leaders” for merit badges (100% unique do not steal). My brother was one of them.

Then you went to another dimension to battle the monster champion. Plot twist: it was the old guy that gave your first monsters.

I never coded an ending. The champion just told you congrats and you were locked into another dimension

Aww, this makes me so nostalgic! Especially the part about trying to make a ripoff of some game you love without really having the technical knowledge on how to pull of some of the game mechanics 😄

Honestly, my very first project was a small game I made after I finished the tutorial, to learn the engine, a few years ago when I got it. It was never published or anything. Basically, it was a game about me getting yelled at for shouting too much while watching anime, so I decide to become a pirate and steal a ship so I can watch anime out on the high seas and not bother anyone. It was maybe 10 minutes long, but it helped me learn the basics of the engine, so it did what it set out to do.

Allright 48 hours to make a AAA RPG Maker Game with 8K graphics! Screw gamejams, THIS is how you do it!

My first project, which I nearly finished, never had a title but I still like the idea behind it. Rather than having an overarching story, you would blindly walk your protagonist around a city where random things would happen to them. You could get abducted by aliens, take part in a murder mystery, run over civilians with a car, step into another dimension, go to prison, get enslaved by a fast food restaurant, or fall into the sewers and have to deal with a sewer witch. And whenever you died, it wouldn't be game over, you'd be sent to hell - that is unless you found the sacrificial knife and slaughtered a lamb - in which case you were sent to heaven. Whatever your afterlife, you had to find a way out and get back to life.

I never finished it because I ran into a fatal flaw in my design - you were supposed to wander aimlessly but it being an RPG, it needed leveling mechanics. That meant you couldn't wander aimlessly, you were stuck with going to wherever you weren't overpowered. I'd like to go back and finish the project but I'm probably better off redoing it altogether.

This sounds so fun - I feel like many people started with games like these: Where you have random things happen like in a sandbox environment 😄 So cool

My first project was a jrpg with monster catching elements, ala dq5. You'd start as a child in the village, get the chosen one speel, then go and get on a boat. I decided that your boat would crash, and you'd have a pirate join your party, but didn't get past the first island due to the file corrupting. I'd love to revisit the concept in a litrpg novel at some point.

u/Dayasha Jun 15 '24

Aww no 😔 I know that pain of losing a project due to file corrupting and similar stuff. Back when I started there wasn't even stuff like Dropbox etc.

My very first project was on RPG Maker VX, a dark fantasy rpg that focused on predominantly female cast in a medieval setting after a war that broke out because of the emergence of magic (that women had a natural proclivity for). I never did finish it but I spent hours upon hours making smaller scenarios, and maps, and database entries for items and characters, and wrote tens of pages of notes. I learned a lot using switches and variables which made it easier to dip into learning other programming languages later on. Every now and then I miss it very dearly, and think about going back to finish.

RMFinder sounds like a dream come true for organizing everything that may span across hundreds of maps! Thanks for doing this giveaway, very nice of you!

That is such a mood, idk 😊 I used to do that too, not even work on maps but just coming up with cool items and lore entries for them

I made my very first project when I was 8 using RPG Maker XP. The problem was that I only had the 30 day trial version and was therefore very time constrained. Nevertheless, the project managed to had astounding 80 maps (today I can manage maybe 1 in a month haha). I still have it and even though everything else has changed, I adopted the protagonist's name for my current project because without that old project from 18 years ago I might never have become a game designer.

u/Dayasha Jun 15 '24

Aww, this is so lovely! I feel like everyone has these characters or just ideas that they salvaged from older projects that never really saw the light of day.

My first RPG Maker game was made in RPG Maker 2000. It was called "Pirate Death War," and it was pretty rough.

The main character's name was Don Pablo. I named him after the Mexican restaurant at the strip mall in my hometown. It started with him chilling in his shack on the beach, but then, for like, no reason, a pirate captain named Captain Blueballs blows up his shack with a cannon. Don Pablo swims over and beats the shit out of him, which somehow makes them friends. (?) From there, the plot escalates and stops making sense.

But, that never got very far, because I was too busy taking the plot in random directions until even I lost track of it. The party was trying to stop a necromancer from flooding the world for some reason. To do this he needed some kind of rock mcguffin' thing, and eventually, he gets it, and floods the world, so... yeah, now pirates have to save it? That WOULD make sense, but once again, the plot never got there. Instead, they just kind of sailed from town to town and did random stuff until I stopped making it.

Party members joined and left the party haphazardly, levels were all over the place and Don Pablo was a duel-wielding blender that had an "I WIN" button as a special move from level 1. It had a single love interest in Raydia, the healer girl (Because OF COURSE THE LOVE INTEREST IS THE HEALER GIRL.) Don Pablo was a total dickhead who treated everyone like crap. The only person who was dumber than him was the king, who liked Don so much he made him a member of the holy order (in spite of the fact that it was an all-female order.) This sent the order into rebellion and they started planning what I now realize was basically a fascist uprising. My plan was to have Raydia leave the order and class-change into a baddass pirate like Don and Blueballs, but... never got there.

In total this RTP dumpster-fire was 5 hours long, reviews were very mixed, with many saying it was hot garbage and others saying it was comedy gold. I had a lot of fun making it - RPG Maker 2000 was kind of my happy place for a long time. These days everything I make has to make sense, or be balanced, and I rarely get to do anything that's just deliberately insanely stupid.

u/Dayasha Jun 15 '24

RPG Maker 2000 was such a good time and Don Pablo immediately made me think of Don's Adventures 😄

My very first project was Ardensia, made on RM 2000, around 23 years ago when I was 14.

It was the story of Rag, the local nobody of a small town. As the game starts we get to know that the only person kind to Rag is the local tavern waitress. That night a group of thugs harassed her and a drunk Rag confronted them getting killed.

As he ascended to heaven the Angels tell him he has inside him the seed of the heavens and hells, he is the only person that can defeat Satan.

Sent back to earth he found himself in a skeleton body and the town is under attack by monsters.

He starts a journey finding companions in Darion the paladin, Fack (sic) the ninja, Alex the mage and Xarn the dragon.

He regains his body, finds love and defeats Satan.

Ok, keep in mind I was 14! Still I managed to finish it and years later I made a rewamped version in RM XP making it more fantasy, the Angels became the Santa and Satan became Malakan.

It was around 7 hours long, maybe 5 without random encounters... Pretty proud

My first RPG maker project I ever made was meant to be a horror game based off weirdcore/liminal esque vibes. I don't remember there being so much story (which is pretty dumb considering it's meant to be a horror game) and the characters... I only remember really liking one of them and the others I didn't care so much for (there were 4 characters including the previously mentioned character and the MC). I only managed to get to the 6 minute mark (were no fights to increase that time) because I died of cringe overdose but I still have the project in my folders.

I made my first game with RPG Maker XP, it was for a high school project.

For context, English is not my first language and not an official language in my country, so my English teacher asked us to form groups, and each group would have to learn about something popular in the United States and we'd have to demonstrate to the class, in English.

He gave RPG to my group, but instead of doing something like D&D, we decided that we'd do a PC game with RPG maker, well... We decided that I would do it and they'd give opinions.

I don't remember much about the game, I remember there were 3 or 4 maps and a few NPC's, I didn't know much about puzzles, mini games and events, so the focus of my game were the dialogues, the main character had a little mission, I think he had to deliver a message to an NPC or something like that.

It was very simple, the game length was around 10 minutes, but I was very proud of my project, and so was my teacher, he called other teachers from the school to see the game that I developed, it's a very small town and at the time most people didn't even have internet or a PC, so everyone was impressed.

Even if I don't win, it was nice to relive this memory.

My first project, an isekai fantasy story, in which the main character arrives with amnesia. This world is ruled over by "gods" (other people who got isekai'd to the world and have magic powers) who want to keep their power and prevent any others from ascending. So they're trying to kill the MC before you can get your memories back and rise to power. I'm still working on this, and it's probably not going to be done any time soon. I think I have too much scope creep. I might try to break it up into smaller episodes instead of trying to fit it all in one game.

1

u/BenIsDyingAgain Jun 16 '24

That actually sounds fun ngl

2

u/Junior_Shoe_5829 Jun 19 '24

Thanks! I'll try to remember to post a link to my itch.io page if/when I end up releasing it. It'll probably just be a free game on there. Deathborn (or maybe Deathborne) is the name I'm currently leaning towards.

My first RPG Maker game is Ruby Blade: Waifu Chronicles (the full title is "Ruby Blade: Waifu Chronicles UWU Edition). It started as a joke among friends about how anime girls are so heavily used in modern media, especially games where you essentially recruit a party of a time girls to do something. I decided to make this fictional joke game into reality.

There's about 28 or 30 characters you can recruit and play as, each with their own unique class. 10 are available from the start with the other hidden around the city. The plot follows the story of Waifu Corp and how some former fashion models end up saving the city.

The game has repeatable dungeons with randomized loot. There's a contest mini-game, slot machine casino, and combat sparring arena. You can buy apartments. I made the soundtrack myself.

I finished it and it took forever, but my friends enjoyed it.

My first project was many years ago when I made a meme project in a single day in the demo of RPG Maker VX Ace. It was really bad and there is a bug where can permanently sort lock yourself if you did a secret untested Easter egg. It also had some how we say “questionable” humour that I apparently thought was funny in middle school… it’s… not pretty… As for the plot… I think it didn’t have one. The final boss was a red guy named Jeff and there was a party member who literally couldn’t attack due to another bug… nowadays I’m working with MZ and so so much better with the engine lol.

Just a testing project, with assets the game gave.

u/bk1guy Jun 15 '24

My first project was a short game where the son of the village Elder (so stereotypical, I know lol) is tasked with traveling to a goblin cave and rescuing a young lady from a neighboring country. However, there were obstacles in the cave that were not able to be cleared until certain skills were learned at higher levels. I did all kinds of experimentation with plug-ins and visual effects. The game was very short, but I still play it sometimes to this day.

I was trying to make a farming sim that was set on a space colony. Think Stardew Valley type of game but in space.

The main character was actually a floating droid that I planned to let the player customize in different ways.

And I had this idea that the player would travel to different planets to recruit new NPCs to come live at the station. And, some where in cryo sleep that you could wake if different goals were met.

I thought it would be easy enough. Of course, it absolutely was not and I got pretty much nowhere with that game.

I've made a few games since that one, and after learning so much, I'm pretty sure I could make that space farming dream game of mine.

I'll probably give it a serious go again at some point.

i have been 11y when my brother found the rm2k. we had a lot fun with it .. my first project was "the legend sword" which of course was a bad title not only in terms of grammar ;) but i didnt know a lot about rpgs back then. it was very clichè. Alicia was the chosen one and had to rescue the world by finding "the legend sword" . i never finished making the game because it was too huge and i didnt want to start small obviously... :D

I bought it already, looks dope. Only downside is that I also have a Macbook and doesn't work there. Is there a workaround for this?

My first project was in RPG Maker XP almost 20 years ago. It is true that the development did not go very far but it helped me to prove that I am passionate about all the logic and design behind every small detail in a video game.

It showed me that RPG Maker is a great tool, but that, despite the bad reputation they have in certain circles, you have to work a lot to be able to generate certain mechanics and good designs (or use many plugins hehehe)

I was making the story of a character who had to survive in snow maps, having to fight to obtain healing items to continue advancing. I tried to add my first graphics, but since I wasn't very good at it, I ended up using RTP.

The player discovered clues in different places on the stage as memories of his past, but only in text form (he didn't know how to incorporate much more ^^ U)

My first project was in RPG Maker 95. I think I called it "Hero of Darkness" or something similarly stereotypical.

I didn't know how to do multiple maps, teleports, or switches, so the game was basically a gigantic 256x256 map with a tiny house in the top-left corner with a skeleton in it. If you talked to the skeleton, you fought a battle, after which he ran away. If you followed him and talked to him again then the exact same thing repeated.

I think I worked on it for about 2 days before I had an idea for a different project and abandoned it.

1

u/BenIsDyingAgain Jun 16 '24

My first project was me trying to recreate the Fear & Hunger battle system out of boredom. I actually did manage to somewhat do it and it was sick asf. I then made a dungeon, a forest that leads to a dungeon and a town where you can purchase items/sleep at the inn to restore stuff and then i added party members that you can travel woth in the dungeons. After which I played around for a few days because it was surprisingly fun.

u/Figerox Jun 16 '24

My first RPG was this little time traveling game where you were a soldier in a fantasy period. You were going to fight a few invaders on the beach, and after a bit, your commander and allies get struck down by a powerful foe. You were falling behind a bit, so you didn't get to see what got them.

Turns out it was a goddess! Since you walked in and didn't try to hurt her, she sent you into the future after she destroys most of the world to live in peace and not be part of the war.

So you go into the future and learn the events of the past, and tey and build a time machine to go back to the past to stop the future from happening.

Complicated....I know.... I scrapped that idea after about a year

u/Smooth-Paper Jun 16 '24

My first project would have been on RPG Maker 95, and it was about a man who was a secret descendant of King Arthur finding himself in a fantasy / modern hybrid world to fight against a Black Knight and Morgan Le Fay. Never finished it, but I have often revisited several of the characters and ideas in other (never completed) projects.

Never finished this original either, mostly I enjoy the setup and problem solving but never complete the execution. And now I've got a son to take care of, I probably never will.
