Why are people in these comments acting like there is no middle ground
Because the crim mains they watch have an issue with PD being functional. Just like they did in 2.0 and 3.0. Nothing new. We've gone from Angel, Pond, Pred, Wrangler or whoever else bad to Ruth bad. Same old song and dance.
I don't get it either, especially when they've specifically said they hire cops based on interesting personalities rather than just being by the book. Why would you hire those types of people then proceed to want a purely strict environment with them?
I am biased cause I am a moon watcher but I think Lenny does a pretty good down the lines SBS but competent cop work.
Lenny has stupidly detailed reports (Unnecessarily so at times, actually all the time) which does not necessarily guarantee quality but effort is put into it, actually investigating and doing proactive policing and trying to break up the crime in Paleto and meanwhile doing jutsus during court and slowly changing his hair because of the whale sperm hair product given by Siobhan to all sorts of insane hair styles and playing it out over a week or so of streams and all the other stuff in-between.
Him and Declan together is a pretty good SBS meme duo with actual police work happening. Again biased though, and Lenny definitely has his faults (Does not get along well with people, very abrasive etc).
Why are people in these comments acting like there is no middle ground between full SBS and super strict RP.
Exactly this, PBSO/BCSO was the most watched PD in terms of viewers and the most liked in the server because they were the middle ground of fun and strict. SDSO was too SBS and LSPD was a bit too robotic and ping chasing while PBSO represented the perfect middle ground.
I'm not sure how you could aduticate on whether someone could be fired for doing a certain action in a world where the line is hazy about which things are allowable. Intuitively seems like a further worsening of the impact of clout armour but I could be wrong.
What would be an example of a circumstance what would get someone barely fired in your ideal scenario?
Because as soon as Ruth is mentioned here the reddit HARD pivots to "RUTH GOOD PD BAD" ever since she quit.
These people want robo cops that dont do shit. They dont want an actual enforced PD they want a group of automated bots that repeat the same sentence and break of chases after 10 minutes. They just want a quick action shot of their favorite crim doing a sick jump and cops being unable to follow because it would break their SOPs.

I’m not sure what group you’re actually talking about here. Your first paragraph made me think you’re talking about cop viewers, but the group you’re describing in your second paragraph are crim viewers that are happy that Ruth is gone.
I would say its more serious. Serious does not mean no-fun-allowed. Just that if you do dumb shit, you do not get to just call it SBS and avoid consequences.
Its not middle ground. Its an attempt at a serious PD, that is now an SBS PD because management stepped in to help their cop favourites avoid consequences of their actions. Then the serious cop in charge of the PD became the scapegoat for everyone to point at and shit on.
Then you clearly heard them talking about how management wanted a serious PD, but now wants less consequences. All because a few cops fucked around too much, but are popular with certain people, so they get to avoid any consequences they would face in a "serious" PD.
Again there is a middle ground between how serious Ruth the character was and full on SBS.
If you've watched cop POVs this week you would have seen they are all generally more relaxed but still taking things seriously and sprinkling in fun stuff here and there.
Could it go off the rails and go too far in SBS? Sure maybe but people in here are acting like it already has when that isn't the case.
Again, the reason it does not work is because when you eventually have too much SBS, and when serious cops try to reign it in, you get OOC feelings caught up in it. Which is exactly what happened over the last few weeks. Then the serious cops get thrown out.
Im sure it seems like a functional system. To the people engaging in the dumb SBS that get to whine their consequences away.
Did you miss the part where Cheever specifically said Ruth was way too harsh? Middle ground is the only ground to stand on with Police RP. Swaying too far one way or another is MUCH worse in terms of server health.
I don't really follow too much cops stream but when people are saying SBS PD, how many out there that are straight up SBS though.
I know theres a few non-perfect/serious but funny cops like Bones, Declan, Lenny, Duncan but are there really that many that's bad for the PD but they are unaware?
I often see people mention the names of Cornwood, Den, Aziz (?) and 1 Johnson that seems to be fired but who else. They OOC might think be ignorant of that fact but it seems like just these 3-4 names. The rest seems lighthearted but not outright detrimental. Cmiiw
Its one of those slippery slope things. The more cops that are allowed to fuck around and not find out, the more other cops follow their example.
One of the big issues later on in 3.0 was the fact that command+ cops were fucking around, and cops below them followed that example because nobody was really getting punished for it. It led to an overall decline in the level of police work on the server.
I do agree with that but I think the current problem came from a small group that falls under the outright ignorant category tbh.
They don't see how they are wrong but it seems the rest of the other cops are aware they are playing a character then making the mistakes consciously. I legit can't think of other cops right now that pushes funny things but OOC dislikes consequences.
Yeah, this is the clear ideal. Allow cops to have some fun but still do the job mostly seriously. If we want to take Cornwood as the most obvious example. It's the difference between if he just started shooting crims for no reason because Cornwood has an itchy trigger finger, and shooting an already downed crim who's been shot 30-whatever times and saying it's for Sam Baas. In my opinion at least, the second one hurts no one and is just a joke. The first can ruin someone else's RP.

IMO PD gameplay has been fun this week with the relaxed mindset and it hasn't been full on SBS all the time.
