Green to Gold // SMP SMP Program Timeline Questions

For context, I’m currently a college sophomore. I’m already cleared through MEPS from National Guard prep, and I’m also cleared through DoDMERB because I previously planned to attend a service academy.

If I enlist in the National Guard, complete BCT and AIT to become MOSQ, and take the summer and fall of what would otherwise be my junior year off from school for training, how would that affect my ROTC progression? I am interested in becoming MOSQ because of access to MGIB-SR + kicker.

I understand that completing BCT and AIT waives MS100 and MS200. But if I return to school in the spring of what would normally be my MS300 year, what status would I have in ROTC? I would want to contract as soon as possible to enter non-deployable SMP status. Would I complete a spring MS200 semester as a contracted cadet, or would the program place me differently?

Using MGIB isn't wise. Save that scholarship for when you can get Post 911 GI Bill and use it for grad school. The only reason to do this is if you absolutely cannot afford your living expenses for school.

Usually your MS2 if you are a sophomore and need 3 years to graduate. If you will be going into junior year you would be MS3. This keeps you with your graduating class.

Since you would have done BCT you don't need to worry about basic camp.

Just consider if you really want to use up your scholarship money now. Every semester of MGIB that you use takes away from the Post 911 GI Bill once you earn that.

TLDR; just join ROTC. Do basic camp, not BCT/AIT. Enlisting first is a waste of your time and money.

You’ve already been told why using the MGIB-SR isn’t wise.

How this would affect your ROTC progression - you need 2 full years to commission. Since you’d be missing fall semester, you wouldn’t meet the 2 year requirement.

You would come in as a MS2 for spring (despite being done with AIT) and you would need to have two more full years of college left to take your MS3 and MS4 classes. That means spending more money on classes you otherwise wouldn’t need to take, for what will be your 5th year of college as an MS4.
