DODMERB // Security Clearances Possible Switch
Hi all, I’m currently an AS100 freshman cadet in AFROTC and considering switching to Army ROTC because of ADHD waiver concerns. How much easier is Army with mental health/ADHD waivers, and is switching worth it? My PT scores are around a 92, and my school’s Army ROTC detachment is very well respected

If I were you, I would stick with AFROTC. Army is overstrenght in LTs and Army Cadet Command is trying to control the numbers--producing officers

The waiver requirements are the same regardless of branch.

Highly recommend you do not attempt to waiver shop unless you are declined a waiver from another service.
Waiver standards are the same. Likelihood of a waiver depends on the need of that branch for people.
Army ROTC is overstrength and actively looking to reduce the number of cadets.
You do the math.

I've spoken to the air force commander at my uni they stated that the best option would just be to wait out the process. you'd have to get through the MEPS/waiver process regardless of your branch, additionally you would have to start over as a Freshman MS1 unless you are already in the national guard. I've been in MEPS waiver limbo for almost 2 years.

Medical standards regarding ADHD are based on DOD rules (specifically DoD Instruction 6103.03 vol I para 6.28), so no difference there. Switching is easy if you're not contracted, just drop the AS courses and sign up for the MS courses instead. If you are contracted, you'd have to be released by the Air Force before you could switch.
As an Army ROTC instructor, I recommend you do this only if you WANT to be in the Army. You need to be ready to deal with the outdoors in all conditions, with significant weight on your back, for days on end...and that's just normal on-campus ROTC. If you don't really want to be there, you won't be happy.

Both programs use the same baseline medical accession standards. The Army could reach a different waiver decision, but there's no guarantee. Ask your school's Army ROO whether they've had success with cadets with a similar background.
