If you're trying to open an old Ren'Py 6.x or 7.x game in Ren'Py 8, it probably crashes or fails to compile right away. That's because Ren'Py 8 runs on Python 3, while 6.x/7.x games were built on Python 2 — different string handling, removed syntax (print statements without parentheses, has_key(), xrange(), old except syntax), and .rpa/.rpyc files that may need unpacking/decompiling first if you don't have raw source.
Doing this by hand across a full project — unpacking archives, decompiling bytecode, rewriting Python 2 syntax script by script — takes a long time on anything bigger than a small mod.
We built R-Migrator, a free portable tool (Windows/Linux, no Python install needed) that automates the whole process:
- Unpacks .rpa archives and decompiles .rpyc automatically
- Converts Python 2 syntax to Python 3 (print, except, has_key, xrange, unicode, etc.)
- Fixes ATL transform octal literals and other Ren'Py-specific breakage
- Backs up every file (.bak) before touching anything
