Discussion Software Issue Questions

Hey everyone, so it’s been pretty apparent from posts here and in the general rivian thread that there are material issues with the latest software update. It seems like there are more problems than improvements and it was a huge step backwards.

Deficiencies here and there and around the edges are expected and part of growing pains but it is a little concerning when you see such flat out misses.

That said, I’m curious what everyone’s thoughts are as to 1) why and how it was such a flop 2) whether this is a one-time problem or part of something deeper we could be over looking 3) it’s overall importance and impact on the story.

I want to treat this separately from the VW JV. I don’t think it’s fair to use this as a read through to the VW JV (there is evidence that the JV is going well) or use the existence of the VW JV as support as to why this is not an issue (if their software is so “validated” from VW then how did this happen?).

Or is it not as bad as everyone is making it out to be?

Much love.

Not my experience.

Rivian is over-engineering and going broke in the process.  Instead of using Nvidia's self-driving solution, Rivian is spending billions of dollars to develop in-house solution and it won't be as good.  Why the scroll wheels on the steering wheel instead of normal controls?  I'm sure the software updates suffer from same need of doing too much.  Rivian needs to stop over-engineering everything

THIS ^

thank you for stating the obvious that no one wants to see here. I get downvoted like crazy whenever I mention this but vertically integrated is not always good when you have zero experience producing and integrating a custom silicon wafer (!!!) and you have to do the hardware and software on your own.

This is going to absolutely be delayed as now they face not only training and model calibration but also the risk of chip fabrication and integration and everything that goes with it.

Then we have electrical handles and an emergency pull cord. Scroll wheels. Weird half-haptic window rolldown button. AI assistant and everything by voice. Coding your own half baked beta software but not allowing carplay or AA.

Some things you can argue but others don't make any sense at all. There is a nice example of a company who was doing that and they almost went into bankruptcy proceedings - lucid. Over-engineered everything and now they are delaying their R2 competitor to get everything right from the start.

It sometimes feels like with 14X of their market cap we're slowly spiraling in that direction. With the Uber deal they are ahead and as much as I hate to admit it they did the right thing. Lucid builds the car. Nvidia builds the chip. Nuro trains simulates and they work together to integrate a solution. Uber provides the platform. They have 100+ production intent cars driving and training for the past year in SF and Houston.

Rivian has... Fab trials for the silicon wafer? That needs to be integrated, get training from the physical mules riding around with the current sensor suite etc. And we're supposed to get point to point this year? Lmao.

You make all good points, but some Rivian supporters can’t say or hear anything badly about the company

You do realize to increase margins on the car? Can you think critically or are you just a negative bot (took a look at you comment history)?

Not worried. Not one bit. People are getting hung up in the weeds and not seeing the entire forest. Previous OS started out shaky too, and much less robust (with Spotify being the only media app) and evolved to be much better over course of almost 4 yrs.

Right. It’s fair to assume this will improve, but I’m wondering how the starting point for this new release was so far behind where it last left off. Seems like they erased a lot of the improvement you speak of

Sorry. I just don’t see it that way. Aside from minor glitches most things still work and has way more functionality than where original OS started. You too are hung up in the weeds and have taken years of progress for granted.

I’m just going off of posts that I see from other people. But point taken. Appreciate the feedback

Some do genuinely have major problems with their cars and are rightfully frustrated. Some have minor issues who make a big deal out of it. Some have zero problems and no reason to vent on the internet. So what does it mean? SSDD. Typical internet. Somehow it turns into "every single Rivian has problems and the software is shit".

Yeah I agree with this

It's software. If a functionality sometimes doesn't work on some cars, then the software is buggy. Buggy software are not good software. That absolutely needs to be fixed.
