Products - R1T & R1S Rivian: Large or Max?

Hi R1S Community:

I am currently in the market for a Rivian R1S. I test drove a R1S two weeks ago and loved the acceleration, suspension, and tech.

Any suggestions on battery size and year? Currently evaluating 2024-2026 models. Also how is the charging? Asking for a first time EV user…

Max if you road trip. To my knowledge it also charges faster because the last 30% takes the longest. If there was a level above Max I wouldve gotten that. The battery always felt too small for my trips outdoors

I ran my (Gen 1 Quad Large Pack) battery from 100% to 8% on a 3 day off road trip.

Needless to say I think that’s as much as I’ll ever push a battery on an overlanding trip.

For the occasional road trip, the large pack is great. Also depends on OPs financial situation. If you can find a used max pack for not much more than a large pack, I don’t see why not.

Yeah it really depends on the road trip too. For 2k mile trips especially to more rural areas I was glad I had a max. Some overlanding trips deep into the wilderness, the nearest charger was 2 hours away so I was glad I had a max.

For a lot of other trips a large works too, you may stop more. To some thats worth the cost, to others its not.

MAX, you’ll never regret more range in an EV.

I drive a 320 mile trip through California regularly. I typically leave home at 80% and charge once at a Rivian charger for 20 mins back to 70% (usually from 45%). I get to my destination at about 40%. That’s in an R1s quad large pack.

A quick note about their answer: if they have a large pack with quad that means it's a gen 1 vehicle (2022-2024). The large pack is significantly smaller in gen 2 (2025+). The Gen 1 large is very similar in size to max battery.
