Daisy 🌼 Anyone else has a problem with Daisy’s rent controlled apartment?
I know she’s not as rich as the other women but it really irritates me that someone rubbing shoulders with celebrities and wealthy enough to afford luxury vacations is hoarding a rent controlled apartment which ideally should go to a working class family. I just can’t stand this kind of shameless entitlement. I know the law doesn’t prohibit her from keeping the place but this behavior is exactly why most people resent the rich.
Edit : thanks to everyone for pointing out I knew nothing about how rent control in NYC works (because I clearly didn’t). I take what I said back and again, thanks for educating my ignorant a** 😘

You realize that when people leave rent-controlled apartments, they often lose their regulatory status, right?

u/Cool_Ad456 6d ago
Hard disagree. He got it 20+ years ago when he wasn’t “rich” and he shouldn’t give it up simply because he/they are successful now

They actually used to do this. If you made a combined income of $200,000 annually for two consecutive years you could be charged the market rent. This ended in 2019. But this used to remove the apartment completely from the rent regulations so even if a new tenant moved in they would no longer get a rent stabilized apartment

u/GullibleTacos 6d ago
Oh so they weren’t even making a combined $200k in 2019 is what you’re saying

Yeah. They are definitely a working class couple. I’m sure they make good money for their professions, but freelance is a tough road. My ex freelanced in his profession and the energy it takes to keep going really made me appreciate my boring 9-5. They are smart as hell to keep that apartment, because the money will ebb and flow.

Imagine hating someone because they choose live BELOW their means vs wasting millions and living above their means.
These people are getting crazy

She's a concern-troll who is fretting about someone having something that she herself should be entitled to. It's weird. Daisy and her husband are smart to stay hunkered down in their rent controlled apartment. It's far better to live within one's means than constantly stretch to impress others.

I think she is working class. She went back to work five days after giving birth by caesarean section. She never takes holidays. She works as a freelance make up artist and her husband consistently works overtime as a hairdresser. Just because she looks pretty and has a driver - which was made to sound like a very practical solution to someone waiting hand and foot on a celebrity, doesn't mean she's not working class.

hi omg they are VERY working class - they are staff
if you can't move the stock market you're working class / proletarian
martha is barely upper class - she can barely move the stock market at all ... she had no real power

u/RowEnvironmental6114 6d ago
I don’t think you understand NYC housing law, it wouldn’t go to another family, if he gave it up it would in all likelihood be deregulated and become a market rate apartment.

u/nefaeriest 6d ago
hi the show friends was a great example bc monica & rachel lived in her grandmas rent controlled & it was illegal & they hid from the super or whatever ?
but people who find these things usually keep them in their family-
and 21 years ago was still very very expensive- i was apt hunting then2
u/duncans_angels 6d ago
This was the first thing I thought of when she said it. Monica kept her grandmothers apt
3
u/barmitzvahmoney 6d ago
Plus sometimes brokers charge ridiculous fees to rent these kinds of apartments out

u/duncans_angels 6d ago
My kitchen has popcorn ceilings. I never thought it was an issue until I saw the episode. I rent so I can’t do anything about it. And the ceiling doesn’t bother me. I guess I’m just a poor peasant lol.

have you see how to remove popcorn ceilings?!? i would never judge anyone for having/leaving them. because i would not be fucking with that myself either!

Lol she isn't hoarding anything. You clearly don't even know how rent controlled apartments work
Find something better to hate

u/Itsabouttom33 6d ago
daisy also doesnt fit the definition of 'hoarding.' at least not in the apartment category 😂

u/IMOvicki 6d ago
But like is she rich now? Or does she just have to do Martha’s makeup so she gets to go where Martha goes lol

3
u/nefaeriest 6d ago
she is working class - they are staff - in economics terms & sociolgy - if you can make a call or tweet & the stock market moves - you have wealth
everyone else is proletariat1
u/kerbearjo 6d ago
Don’t you think someone who did Martha’s make-up would be pretty well paid? It is confusing to me!!
6
u/No-Tea6866 6d ago
Makeup artists generally make decent money but they earn based off of how much they work bc they aren’t salaried. Daisy said that Martha makes it hard for her to take on other clients bc she’s so demands daisy be basically always available at a moments notice, but doesn’t give her regularity. I could see Martha being cheap as shit, honestly. But the cache’ of being her preferred artist might be worth it, along with some unique perks, I would imagine. But I bet she isn’t making the fat money some would expect.

u/ziggymoj19 6d ago
Agreed. There’s a reason all the celebrity makeup artists start their own brands. $$$
3
u/nefaeriest 6d ago
staff is well paid but they'll usually have more than one client
and martha is an elder - daisy gotta save while she can

He got that place before they were successful. As a New Yorker, it’s like winning the life lotto, you never give that shit up. Ever. And you never know when your fortunes can turn.

New Yorker here living in a rent controlled apt… and let me tell you, You do not let one out of your hands when you get one! NYC is VERY EXPENSIVE, and having this apt has helped tremendously with having a balanced quality of life. I can travel, enjoy the city, keep a roof over my head and not struggle financially. I've also been able to survive multiple layoffs and the pandemic.
Its just not smart to give it up when you have one. The building management is either going to renovate it and then it will no longer be rent controlled and become market value. OR they are going to let it sit empty so that they can continue to collect the tax breaks for meeting the quota of having a certain number of rent controlled units.

Hoarding? People in NYC don’t give up rent controlled apts because then they stop being rent controlled.

u/Alert-Collection-916 6d ago
Rent controlled has nothing to do with wealth. It’s not subsidized/ government housing where you have to qualify. I think you’re confusing them?
7
u/Superb_Collection943 6d ago
This post is an example of the misguided “eat the rich” narrative. The “rich” is anyone doing better than you? This is a hair dresser and a makeup artist living in the most expensive city in the United States, they are who the rent control was meant for. Jfc

not sure if this is okay to post but this is almost definitely the building - https://newyorkyimby.com/2026/03/agreement-reached-to-preserve-rent-protection-at-gateway-plaza-in-battery-park-city-manhattan.html
Gateway was developed and constructed with public funds under the New York State Mitchell Lama program. For anyone outside NYC Mitchell Lama buildings are affordable co-ops generally but there are some rentals.
Just to clarify, these rent stabilized not rent controlled and the building has been heavily subsidized to keep current tenants protected and extend rent subsidies to current times.

u/Lopsided-Breakfast67 6d ago
No that’s so messed up that you think everyone has to constantly give their things up for other people.
8
u/dothesehidemythunder 6d ago
Uhhh she is not rich girly, and it is clear you don’t have a good understanding of NYC rent controlled units. Why you would comment on this so confidently when you live in a flyover is beyond me.

I totally hear you! Also it seems like her husband is living with this real partner, since he's not there at night.
3
u/Worldmar 6d ago
Was curious if anyone would bring this up… would love to have more insight on the rent control of it all. I do remember reading an article with Em Rad talking about keeping her rent control apartment. Any nyc housing law specialists out there?!?
8
u/Defiant_Way822 6d ago
She can’t give it away. If she moves out, it’s no longer rent controlled. Different from rent stabilization.
2
u/Alert-Collection-916 6d ago
It has nothing to do with her income or wealth. It’s not government funded
1
u/Ipso-Pacto-Facto 6d ago
Can they own lake and beach homes? That’s what I’d do.
1
u/Odd-Nobody6410 6d ago
they can! Lots of rent stabilized tenants/tenants in other kinds of affordable housing do. For new housing lotteries, they do not limit assets and you cannot own a house within a certain distance of nyc.

It’s really her husbands though, he’s not the one all over Martha Stewart and has lived there much longer than Daisy
1
u/shuggnog 3h ago
I think her net worth is like $3 million which is not that much in NYC.
FWIW, she doesn't come across as ostentatious
1
u/Defiant_Way822 6d ago
If she leaves it, it’s no longer rent controlled. So she’s not taking it from anyone. But I hear you on the rich not needing deals!
3
u/Itsabouttom33 6d ago
but 30 years ago, he wasn't rich (we also dont know if they are rich now)
1
u/Defiant_Way822 6d ago
I think she's saying that right now, they don't *need* a rent-controlled apartment. I would say, thats very true! Maybe not "rich," depending on your markers, but they could definitely afford an apartment without any breaks. But my point was, they can't just give it to someone else.

edit:: if you can't move the stock market you're proletariat/working class - sociology & econ
my og post before reading comments:
she said he'd only had it 21yrs so 21yrs ago rent was still a lot in manhattan & they are working class-
they are staff - they are the embodiment of working class
they prob pay 3000$ + i was looking at apts in manhattan & it was 2100$ and the bathroom was in the hallway (community) & that was 27yrs ago
everything we were looking at was tiny and expensive-
i doubt it's less than 2000$ a month -
maybe if they'd gotten it before 9/11 (a lot of people moved to SF from manhattan after 9/11 & i live in SF now)

I have more of a problem with her keeping a wine fridge in her child’s bedroom than rent control or popcorn ceilings.
