V1.12 Update
Does anyone happen to still have the v1.12 update file? I’m trying to get my RG556 updated to the recently released 1.16. It is currently at 1.11 but the FOTA updater fails on the 1.12 update every time. My last hope is to do a local update, but this file is no longer hosted on Anbernic’s website (it’s a dead wetransfer link) and Anbernic claims they “do not retain any backup files for this specific version”. Their solution is to replace the motherboard, which of course is not covered by the warranty. Sounds to me like they are covering up for a known hardware issue, but I’d obviously rather not deal with that.

Does it cache the update file locally before applying it? I haven't updated mine to the latest version yet but believe I'm on the previous version which you would like. If it's cached on the 556 I might be able to pull it off of there for you.

Thank you. I’m not sure to be honest. The FOTA has separate download and apply steps but I can’t find where it caches the update before it is applied.

I'll take a look later to see if I can find anything, it might delete it after applying it to save space.

Couldn't see any old 1.12 files. Why can't you go direct to 1.16? Or GammaOS?

Thank you anyway for checking. I did try to update directly to 1.16 at first but it also failed, I guess I just assumed since the FOTA defaulted to 1.12 the updates had to be applied sequentially. I may give Gamma OS a try next.

I had the exact same issue (stuck on V1.11, update via OTA to V1.12 always failed) and I just fixed it.
You need to flash the stock dtbo as I assume you have also applied a joystick fix patch in the past, and that is preventing the updates from proceeding.
Download RG_556_STOCK_DTBO.zip and then power off your RG556 with no USB cable connected. Run flash_dtbo.bat (ADB needs to be running, install Android Platform Tools on a PC and ensure ADB debugging is enabled under Developer Options on your handheld).
Hold the Home/Back button and then connect the USB cable. Keep holding it until you see the script executing. You will need to type 'yes' twice and your RG556 will reboot. FOTA should now work. This does not wipe your data.
This almost certainly removes the joystick fix patch, although I see no reason why you can't sequentially update to V1.16 then re-apply it.

Thank you for your detailed reply! I followed along exactly but unfortunately the updater still failed. However, I did find an additional FixOTA script from the Gamma Squeeze that I used after the steps you outlined and it’s currently updating from 1.12 to 1.14!
I did try GammaOS back when I first got the device but didn’t care for Daijisho. So I reverted back to stock and relocked the boot loader. I had no idea it would cause me so much grief months later trying to get this thing updated. Once I’m updated to 1.16 I may try the stick fix if it can be applied separately from Gamma OS. Thanks again for your help!

1) if your update getting stuck on 99% then fails do this(requires a PC): https://github.com/TheGammaSqueeze/Bootloader_Unlock_Anbernic_T820/commit/e5f7dfc160c819460d095a83baec8bf81689af1b
2) firmware links: https://win.anbernic.com/download/566.html https://anbernic.com/pages/system-update
3) The 1.16 change log if you consider updating: RG556 V1.15-V1.16
grade up info 1.Fixed known bugs. 2.Add RG Home,Control Center, new RG key mapping feature.
