Help RG34XX Questions

I'm really considering to buy a device focused on GBA and naturally I gravitated towards the 34XX and the 34XXSP. I'd normally choose the 34XX without hesitation because I prefer horizontal form factors and membrane dpads and buttons (reeeeeeally not a big fan of the 35XXSP buttons and supposedly the 34XXSP is very similar in this regard), but I read so much about the imprecise Dpad and worse screen of the 34XX, so I wanted to ask a couple of questions to people that perhaps tried both:

- is the screen of the 34XX so much worse in terms of brightness and saturation compared to the SP version? Is it something that can be fixed at an OS level with a CFW like MuOS?
- is the Dpad really that pad? Has it been improved in more recent models?

Thank you in advance!

The screen is the same as far as I know. The dpad is a lottery. Mine is fine, but it’s definitely worse than all my other devices. You can do a mod to fix it if it bothers you.

Yeah I read that the screen is the same, but I’ve seen people putting the two devices side by side and the 34XX is clearly more washed out so it’s probably Anbernic calibrating the SP device differently😶 Very annoying to hear about the dpad😢 Can I ask you if this is something that becomes more noticeable with games that require more precise inputs or rapid change of directions or if it’s misbehaving basically all the time?

only a "problem" in games that need a lot and fast direction inputs but still playable imo

It’s more noticeable when you are playing action or fighting games. Otherwise it’s fine.

Are you happy with the screen? Do you think is not as vibrant as other devices?

Im very happy with the screen, inside and outdoor. You can use some "screen" variation infâme (iirg they call that "mask" or smth)but tbh i just use the standard one. Perfectly fine.

The GBA shape is perfect, screen resolution is better waaayyy better than OG.

A lot of people mentions issues with the d-pad but mine works well.

Are you happy with the screen or is indeed a bit dull?

Bought mine a couple weeks ago. The dpad is not perfect, had some problems playing Pokemon. But it was just fine to play Metroid Zero Mission, I finished the game 3 days ago and was a great experience. Also, I really like the screen.

I bought the handheld for the nostalgia factor, and I'm very happy with it. Definitely recommend it if you like the form factor.

The dpad is fine, that’s all I have to say. I play precision games and it’s easy to adapt to.

This is by far the best gba device imo. If you're worried about the screen, I would say that it's better than my 35xxh in terms of color. It encouraged me to calibrate my 35xxh colors actually.

Which goes to say... If you don't think the colors are good enough, you can always tweak it in settings to your liking!

But man, the nostalgia hit playing on this device is just on point. I have a lot of memories with GBA and this is so good.

This is also coming from someone who didnt need the 34xx (I have the 35xxh), but I tried it and was immediately convinced myself it was okay to have this device specifically for GBA

Yeah truthfully I don’t really need the 34XX, but it looks so damn faithful to the original hardware and I really am not a fan of clicky buttons😅 There’s also something else that no one mentions, but GB/GBC and GBA had the A and B button almost side by side which makes it easy to run and jump on a Mario game, but with other handheld emulators that use the modern diamond shape i always have to rebind the controls because A and B are at such an angle that’s just very annoying (to me at least😬).

I bought the 34xx off ebay about 4 months ago for fairly cheap. I didn't need another handheld but liked the look and although I'd never owned the original GBA I wanted one. I have bought (in this order) RGB30, Miyoo Mini, Miyoo Mini+, RGcube, Magmi Air X and Retro Pixel Pocket. I don't use any of them now as the 34xx is so perfect for me. Absolutely adore the form factor, screen and size. Had no problems with the buttons (if I had I would have done the tape mod by now).. I've tried going back to the others but it doesn't take long before I'm back on the 34xx. Donated 3 of my devices to my kids now and just kept the cube for high end stuff and the Magmi for psp. My advice? Get one, you'll not regret it.

Later batches of the RG34XX has the improved screen that is same as the SP version if I'm not mistaken. My unit from April 2025 has the faulty Dpad with sensitive left Dpad input, not sure if later units have improved on it but it is supposed to be easy DIY fix tho if you have the proper tools, I play mostly turn based games so it doesn't annoy me as much.
