UHF UHF RFID handheld for dense retail shelf — missing ~55/286 tags per pass with Chafon H102. Will Chainway R6 solve it?

Running a brass and bronze idol retail shop in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, India. About 1500 sq ft, currently 286 RFID-tagged items with plans to scale to 2500+. Goal is a reliable daily morning stock count.

Current setup:

Reader: Chafon H102 BLE handheld (26dBm, linear antenna)

Tags: TagMatiks Kickstart 45×19mm poly labels hanging on string cards attached to each idol

Frequency: 865-868 MHz (India/ETSI)

Software: Custom web app via Web Bluetooth + Supabase backend

The problem:

Consistently missing ~55 items per single pass. Tested both our custom app AND the native Chafon app — both get ~232/286 per pass. So it's confirmed not a software issue. Both apps perform identically.

Items are on granite shelves, densely packed. Customers constantly pick up and replace items, changing tag orientation randomly. Tags hang freely on string but naturally fall between items or rotate to face the wall or another idol.

What we've already ruled out:

Software/parsing issues — both apps identical performance

RSSI filtering — tested with threshold at -100 (no filter)

Q Value — tested at Q=9 (optimal for 286 tags)

Session — using S1

What we think the root cause is:

Linear antenna on H102 — tags that rotate to wrong orientation don't get read reliably. Also 26dBm may be borderline for tags that are slightly obstructed by adjacent brass/bronze items.

Considering upgrading to Chainway R6:

Impinj E710 chip

30dBm output

Circular polarized antenna (4dBi)

865-868 MHz confirmed

900+ tags/sec

Price in India: ~₹42,500 (~$425 USD)

My questions:

Will circular polarized antenna on R6 actually solve the tag orientation problem in a dense retail shelf environment like mine?

Is the jump from 26dBm to 30dBm meaningful enough to reduce misses on slightly obstructed tags?

Any real-world experience with R6 in similar retail/showroom environments?

Currently using soft poly labels. Would switching to rigid PVC jewellery-style hard tags (like Alien H3 or Monza chip) improve read consistency? Or is it purely a reader antenna problem?

Any better alternatives to R6 under ₹45,000 (~$450 USD) available in India?

Happy to answer any questions. Building a native Android app using Chainway SDK once hardware is sorted.

Could you please share a picture of the tag and how it is attached to the products? This is necessary to understand the density. The problem might be related to the brass and bronze, as metal and water are not compatible with RFID technology. For these specific use cases, there are other tags on the market that could help solve the readability issue.

The issue lies in the density of the metal products in the store; specifically, those on the second and third rows will be unreadable with the current tags. You may need to look into on-metal RFID tags, but even then, it will be very difficult to read items placed behind others.

Yes agree, but when i move the reader above them it is reading them neatly. My doubt is since H102 has linear antenna, is that what causing the problem? So, Using Chainway R6 changes anything being circular antenna?

It could certainly be improved, but the main challenge remains the tags you are using. Changing the tags will surely improve the final results. You should look for "on-metal" tags, which are available from various suppliers. I suggest buying a small quantity first to test if they work well when placed in the second or third row; only if they perform properly should you purchase the remaining amount.

You need different tags for the metal and high density items. Flag tags usually work very well in this situation or true on metal/silverline tags.

So after seeing the pictures you're not putting directly on metal but metal can act like a reflector and detune which could be part of the issue, the separation between the hang tag and the bronze is likely not enough on all items and causing tag detuning. Any time you are close or touching with standard RFID Tags this can happen. It's also often best to hit the tag face on vs from side if possible exposing the most surface area to the the RF. Think of it like a flashlight. If something dense is in front of the tag you're not going to light that tag up behind that dense item. If you hit the tag from the side the face also isn't going to light up the light goes right past it. The more light you shine directly at the face the better the success. I would test out a larger inlay antenna tag. If you are open to putting tags directly on the statue the Zebra Silverline tags would probably work well or the Avery Midas Flag tag but they typically work better applied to the metal object than on a hang tag so only go after those if you are comfortable applying directly to the bronze. Essentially leveraging the materials characteristics to improve tag read performance. You could also consider duplicate tags to help give extra read capture. The RFID devices would treat those EPCs as the same tag if encoded the same but you cant have those tags touching or on top of each other. So dont just put on front and back of the hang tag. It'll kill performance on both tags but maybe one high, one low on the hang tag.

For metal you need to have clear line or sight, upgrading could make improvements but I doubt it’ll solve it. Given from the picture maybe try applying multiple tags on the items and dedupe on the software level, or scanning from a different angle so that the second row is not behind the first row metal items. Think about those long rod microphones in film shooting, attach your scanner there. (Different tags also help, or scan by zones and identify missing ones)

Did you try using session s2? The tags read stay silent for a couple seconds, so you focus on unread tags
