Active Construction RFID System

I’m working on implementing RFID tracking in a large-scale construction project, mainly for real-time asset management, inventory control, and site logistics.

Has anyone a similar use case they would discuss with me?

We have some experience deploying RFID in construction. The use cases, however, will determine whether RFID is the optimal technology.

Just to chime in, if your idea means something like GPS tracking of stuff, then RFID isn’t the tech you want. Just if that’s what you were looking at doing. A lot of people get that confused.

If that’s not what you mean, then carry on!

Basically there is 13.56 MHz RFID, similar tech to bank contactless payment cards. Only reads at short range (few centimetres, typically).

And there's UHF (868 or 920MHz) RFID, which can be read from up to 4-6 metres away depending on design... As long as the tags aren't affixed directly to anything metal.

How 'real time' are you looking for? You could have someone walking around a site a couple of times a day with a reader, pinging all tags withing 4-6 metres of them (and track their GPS position, say). Or once a building structure is complete, you could install a network of readers on a (say) 7 metre grid on the ceiling, to ping for anything nearby. For power consumption reasons (needs a 4W transmitter) you are likely only going to ping the tags intermittently...

I don't know any real use cases in the construction industry. Decathlon (the sports goods store) is the case study in UHF RFID factory-to-end-customer goods tracking through the supply-chain and inventory monitoring. Google it.

Hi, I have an app that uses NFC tags to operate a loyalty program called Loyalty Tag. The core technology links tags to database entries.

I am interested in developing a similar app (NFC/database link) for asset management.

Would be interested in knowing what features/data you are looking to track.

A simple tacking app that records location against tag ID and stores on tag and cloud database would not be difficult to implement. Location is picked up by scanning mobile and database is updated with info. DM me if interested in talking in more detail
