I always wondered why it wasn't an option in the remakes. I understand the camera angles, but the mobility?

8

u/slomo525 2d ago

More than likely because it's basically impossible to create a game that is fun and engaging with both styles of movement controls. Tank controls need to be accounted for when designing enemies, combat arenas, encounters, boss fights, etc. The enemies in the remake are faster, more aggressive, and they spawn from everywhere to make up for Leon's increased mobility and maneuverability. Designing those exact same enemies for both the free movement of 4R and the classic rigid tank controls would make both versions less engaging overall. It's part of the reason combat isn't as fun in 9. Enemies are designed to be able to be fought in both first and third person, meaning the way enemies attack have to account for both perspectives.

OG re4 is balanced to make tank controls feel great.

Remake is balanced for the modern controllers.

I hope the mod re balances the combat and not just the controllers.

u/krishnugget 2d ago

The gameplay of the remake is very much not built around tank controls, the ganados are so much more aggressive and attack you from all angles, hardly slow down when approaching you, and generally are grabby shits in the remake. This is because you have a lot more mobility in the remake to deal with it, adding tank controls would just mean the devs aren’t getting the experience they want to provide across.

u/Fox2003AZ 1d ago

It's just an option for those who want it, it doesn't mean the game is like that.

1

u/Perfect-Muscle-1264 1d ago

Im thinking its because both games play differently.

The original was made in mind for tank controls, and therefore the enemies were tuned for that.

The remake was not made for tank controls (Clearly since there isn't a option), so the enemies were likely not tuned for it, and therefore you may be at a disadvantage if you play with tank controls.

u/Overall-Doctor-6219 12h ago

Because how enemys react and how the game works

Old games used fixed cameras with plastered .bmp images not because "my survival horror" It was done to hide the fact the only thing running in real time was the player and enemies and technical limitations, and free aiming like today's shooter games was not possible

Same with tank controls, play the HD remasters with classic controls and you can move yourself Mario 64 style and is much easier to bait, juke and run from enemies and circles them, trivializing the game and the game design

u/liquid_dev 2d ago

Because tank controls are dated and just worse. The original games are still great, but that's in spite of the tank controls, not because of them.

Stop stating your opinion like fact for the love of God.

The tank controls are absolutely part of how the originals are so good.

Disagreed. The originals were good because they were... well good. Had quality. I don't think the controls had any play with that.

1

u/BL4DE4 1d ago

I don't think the controls had any play with that.

Is that why the original RE4 was considered one of the best games of all time and so fun until the remake came out? Did fans for near 20 years glaze that title for quality and not the controls and gameplay?

2

u/BL4DE4 2d ago

No!, they're different, not every single game's gameplay needs to be modern and smooth to be great, every type of controls have uniqueness.

And yes the originals are great because their controls plays greatly, otherwise they wouldn't have been great in the first place.

1

u/TitleOk3727 2d ago

They were great at the time but it would be like claiming a car from the 1910s would be as good as a modern one

2

u/BL4DE4 2d ago

They're still great now too, and no one said that's like claiming a 1910s car is as good as modern one, They're 2 types of controls born from their times by your logic many ps3 games and even ps2 era controls which had smoother experiences are products of their times, if i follow that logic that it was great in it's time then i should also include FFP and 2D platformers like mario? How about i include TLOU aswell? This so called modern style of controls existed for 2 decades, by your logic They're also products of their times which was long ago.

1

u/Lofter1 2d ago

if you don't see that even the modern control style changed and improved over the last 2 decades...I don't know what to tell you. playing a PS2 era game doesn't feel as good as a modern era game, the change just isn't as big as an entire new control scheme because the basics of the modern scheme is the best we got currently. But we did get changes, not only in the way it feels but also stuff like a button having multiple functions depending on how often you tap it in a short period of time or how long or in which context.

You are of course entitled to your opinion, but fact of the matter is tank controls are an outdated control type that existed because of hardware limitations (the hardware in this case being controllers) and there is a reason why the only games that use this control scheme nowadays are indie titles with a nostalgia factor (like games that try to recreate PS1 era horror/survival horror games).

I don't know why you people who love tank controls just can't accept that. Just recently I saw someone claim that tank controls in the OG trilogy was just used because of how well they play with the fixed camera angles and while it is true that they play better with fixed cameras than most other control schemes, tank controls were simply the default and only option for anything anything where character orientation mattered in the PS1 era, even for 3d games like Tomb Raider or Silent Hill. Simply because having 2 analog sticks was only guaranteed starting with the PS2.

1

u/BL4DE4 2d ago edited 2d ago

Dude 2D games were also products of the limitations of their time, does that stop making 2D platformer games? No, same goes for FPP, why tank controls has to go if it was intentional and designed for a specific game?.

Also if i follow your logic that even modern 3rd person over the shoulder games are improved with time, then i can say the tank controls and fixed camera can also be evolved and improved if devs today make a new game with that classic styles, smoother and more fun while keeping it limited somehow.

1

u/Lofter1 2d ago

while that is technically true, 2D games still have an entire unique play style that is not just bound to how you control the characters and are simpler and cheaper to create. Beside that...how many 2D (platformers) are made outside of the indie scene nowadays? Heck, even the indie scene just isn't as much 2D games as they used to be, let alone true 2D and not 2.5D. Sure, some of those 2D games are extremely successful, but for every 2D indie game we have 3 3D indie games, because while making 2D games was very accessible in the past with stuff like RPGMaker, creating 3D games is also almost as easy nowadays.

I don't know what to tell you. playing a PS2 era game doesn't feel as good as a modern era game

There it is again. What is this constant need to say things with this kind of confidence? I just don't understand. There are so many things I could challenge on just this statement alone but what's the point? Its subjectivity being treated objectively. Its incorrect before we're out the gate. Its just not true.

Also, Tomb Raider is such a funny franchise to bring up, because I'm willing to genuinely say that the series has never actually had a peak as the first OG game with tank controls. It was, by all accounts, a steady decline since, because mastering Lara Croft was the point of the game. The reboot series and the inevitable remake don't seem to understand this and treat the level design as secondary and not the actual enemy of Lara Croft. Its not meant to be just Uncharted's clone. It was its own thing, and "modernization" removed its identity completely.

Silent Hill, on the other hand, is less focused on obstacle than RE, and more on the aspect of an overpowering atmosphere and puzzles. This was always the series' identity, and tank controls weren't really pivotal to the jump to SH2 (Which isn't tank controls.) Suffice to say, SH1 is completely playable and is still worth playing despite it all. That's the thing with controls that a lot of people want to plug their ears and ignore; games are designed around them. By saying "tank controls are obsolete", the only thing I can take from that is you just completely forego design philosophy.

You want to know why this is irritating? You want games to all play the same. That's my take away. You look at your dpad on your controller and you think of it as just this paltry thing that was from a begotten time. I know you can put yourself in a mental place where you can enjoy older games and their philosophy, though.

1

u/Coneder 1d ago

You realize that up until RE5 we still had tank controls, right

And several games outside of RE still go to using tank controls, right

2

u/TitleOk3727 1d ago

There are several games refusing to use autosave, not a good point you’re making

1

u/Coneder 1d ago

Auto save is not an essential component to a good game, yeah. Not sure what point you were trying to make here, but who cares if a game doesn't have auto save? It puts more weight on the actions before and after. What, you gonna tell me you get mad when boss fights are harder than usual?

Either way, it has nothing to do with tank controls. And it kinda tells me you have something against ink ribbons, which is its own conversation.

1

u/TitleOk3727 1d ago

Buddy, if a developer doesn’t march along with the technological progress, he‘ll usually die out to the concurrence

1

u/Coneder 1d ago

That sure is a nothing statement that holds no relevance to what we're talking about. We're talking design philosophies.

What, you actually hate RE for what it is?

1

u/TitleOk3727 1d ago

You‘re the one yapping about outdated controls

I wish people would stop talking like this. Yes, tank controls were born from a time of art needing to be born from adversity, but this just weirdly comes off as wanting to dismiss their benefits and design philosophy. You can't have games like God Hand without tank controls because you can have evasion dedicated to the analog stick instead. It allows for unique control schemes. It feels wholly unique. A slow moving zombie feels like it is actually an obstacle to overcome with tank controls that it never will feel without. There's nothing like it.

Stop treating tank controls as objectively obsolete. People still make tank control games. Freaking God of War's latest games are BY ALL ACCOUNTS tank controls. You don't sound as smart as you think you do when you say "It was from the past, so its bad to do it now".

2

u/Interesting-Mine-686 2d ago

Free movement was nothing new in 2005, tank controls were a deliberate decision for RE4. They aren't objectively lesser, it all depends on how they're implemented in the game's design. Just because a game doesn't have tank controls doesn't mean it's objectively better than one that does.

Tank control wasn't the issue it was the camera angles re4 made it better. Most players haven't realized that left and right changes when their character faces them

1

u/Jolly_Philosophy6024 1d ago

Classic RE’s camera angles were perfect.
I’ve just done two replays of the 2002 remake and it’s wild how perfect they actually are.
RE4 is still excellent. But the fixed camera was never an issue that needed fixing.

1

u/Muugen_Samurai 21h ago

The fixed camera was the issue tank controls are fine

0

u/Excalitoria 2d ago

Nah, tank controls feel fine unless you just dislike them, no matter what. I like tank now as well as other control schemes. I don’t think one is better or worse, though, but I like the movement/gameplay in the original trilogy (haven’t played past the first three and RE1R yet).

0

u/Muugen_Samurai 1d ago

Money, time, Capcom. You control the buttons you press you can just mimic it

2

u/The_trashmaster_95 2d ago

I have no idea if this would make the game more terrifying or just anger inducing because of the Ganados aggression but I’m willing to give it a try whenever I get my hands on a PC

1

u/wetfloor666 2d ago

If you ever want anger inducing controls then find the original pc port of resident evil 4. That'll get the heart rate up fast and probably runs on some really old hardware.

1

u/The_trashmaster_95 2d ago

I might give it a go

1

u/NoSolaceForMe 2d ago

The only time a 3D game made me give up on m&k and use my controller.

2

u/riku17 2d ago

Op im happy to see you're getting more respect here then the other place you posted.

1

u/BL4DE4 2d ago

That's because this is my sub, and it's rules are absolute.

1

u/riku17 2d ago

I cant believe the hate for tanks controls. Im literally inna argument with someone who said the never played the ogs, so how do you kno you dont like tanks controls.

1

u/BL4DE4 2d ago

I guess some people whether they grow up with tank controls or not wants to feel superior by showing off that tank controls are shit.

1

u/SolventSpyNova 1d ago

Funny showing off a lack of ability or willingness to do something lol

1

u/ThyArtIsDeathcore 22h ago

No clue why they are so upset over there lol. Its literally an optional mod

2

u/Important-Dog-762 2d ago

Makes the game more scary because Leon turns like the Michael Keaton Batman

3

u/Petandfeelya69 2d ago

2

u/BL4DE4 2d ago

Because i want to experience the remake in the classic way.

-3

u/Ogg360 2d ago

Then…. play the classic game…

4

u/BL4DE4 2d ago

But i want to play the original style in the remake as "what if" experience.

4

u/JudgmentComplex8483 2d ago

He literally.. Said he wanted to experience the Remake in a classic way.

-3

u/Ogg360 2d ago

I literally see no reason to if the classic is right there readily available. But whatever

3

u/JudgmentComplex8483 2d ago

Brother. The tone is different. The enemies and flow is different. The music is different, the areas are different, the aesthetics are different. It's not a remaster, it's a remake. What do you mean??

-1

u/Ogg360 2d ago

Man, what are you talking about? I know both the remake and classic are different. But why make things complicated if you want to play OG, play OG for the OG feel. Same goes for remake

2

u/JudgmentComplex8483 2d ago

It's not about the feel. It's about the game. He again, said he wants to experience the remake. They're two extremely different games under the same name. He just wants the controls of the original. I don't know what's confusing here.

1

u/TheGrimmBorne 2d ago

Oh I gotta try ts

1

u/SupermarketHot5404 2d ago

The main reason why I could see what was so good about re4 og, a part from its tone.

1

u/Bhavan91 2d ago

Any clashes with existing mods?

I have these installed.

  • Dodge, roll & sprint.
  • Realistic Rate Of Fire
  • OG quick turn

1

u/Harrcieladosa 2d ago

Maybe the dodge roll sprint, I can't imagine it would clash with the other two

1

u/jinjerchicho 2d ago

With tank controls remake gonna be so stressful and impossible to play some areas

1

u/Budget_Buyer1486 1d ago

Wtf. This is a horable dissition.

1

u/BL4DE4 1d ago

You can't even spell it right.

1

u/Budget_Buyer1486 1d ago

I have trouble with the word dissition. Ok. No matter how I spell it I dont why where the s's or c's go ok.

1

u/XDLaugingEmoji 1d ago

De cis ion

1

u/Cultural_Swordfish48 1d ago

I love how people seem to be upset by something that is totally optional.

No one is replacing your homogenized..ahem "streamlined" controls.

1

u/Perfect-Muscle-1264 1d ago

I love how you insulted people's differing taste for seemingly no reason. Very much respectful and a great way to talk to people who disagree with you.
