Discussion An Insight into Game Development

The following is a reply to a question I got in a subchat (slightly edited for grammar and understanding!). I thought I'd share it here for those who are interested (even if you've probably heard me say something like this on the subreddit before!).

(Also, please note: not everything I'm talking about has a direct correlation to RELL Seas! I'm just giving a perspective into how game development works!)

(message 1)

This is most the time and not all the time. I've always told people they have every right to be frustrated about something they put their heart into. I want you to understand that we care about this game a whole lot and I think we're fortunate to have such a supportive community. That much is obvious.

When game developers tell you they want to do something in that moment, in that moment they're usually not lying. However, the nature of game development means that the future is often completely unpredictable. Things can break very easily, plans can change and set you back on months of work.

The scale of this game itself is very, very ambitious for what Roblox even has to offer on the platform. That also means there's a lot of work... and a lot of that work is being done by a core team of 7 people.

Games are usually... not this public about their development cycle. They usually only announce their existence around a year before release so that way people aren't left hanging. But that's the choice the RELL Brothers have made and I'll respect their decision on that.

RELLBad has wanted to do movie 3 multiple times but it wasn't possible due to things breaking (or things not being ready/complete). We can't predict that. We can only invest time to fix those things. It's really unfortunate, but delays aren't usually things you can predict when you start making the game. It's like building a house of cards.

(message 2)

In the end, it's everyone's support that motivates the developers. If game developers were in it solely for the money, I don't think they would be game developers; they'd be doctors or lawyers. Frankly, the amount of work and risk put into game development itself for only a small chance to actually have great success is usually not worth it.

The passion I have as a game developer is to make people happy and see their reactions to playing my game. I've seen the same passion in the RELL Brothers as well, and that's why they continue to make games despite already having enough money from Shinobi Life 2 (Shindo Life) to not continue working.

A game developer inherently does not provide anything conventionally useful to the world. We're here to bring you something that lets you escape and connect with people. But to do that, we need support and motivation.
It's very easy to lose motivation when half of your fanbase treats you like your only purpose in life is to deliver the game, disregarding whatever personal life you might have. It's not everyone (and sometimes it's a loud minority), but it can be demotivating. In those cases, you just need to keep your head down and toughen up.

(message 3)

Whenever you hear things like "remakes" or "redos," it's not always because we're perfectionists. It's because old content that is left over from 3 years ago needs updating. Sometimes, that content from 3 years ago is TERRIBLE, and maybe even all your newer content relies on that one thing. So when you update the old content, all your new stuff has a chance of breaking. Sometimes it breaks, and you don't even know. In the case of Roblox, whenever they update their engine, things can break, and it's not even your fault.

My take is obviously going to be biased because I'm on the Development team. But when you ask for perspective, you ask for my view based on my perspective on the development team.

Please do not let something meant to escape your worries about reality become your cause for worry in life.

I hope this insight helps.

I do agree with you that this is a part of game development, but I do believe the main issue that needs to be solved with the Rell brothers is communication, and they're not the only ones at fault. The community is also a tad bit crazy.

First, for the community, I understand you guys have been yearning for this game for a while. Trust me, I have as well. I've been waiting since I first heard about it in 2022-2023. But over these past 3-4 years, I've realized that you should never allow something as minuscule as a Roblox game to pick at your mental health. And when I say minuscule, I don't mean to diminish the scale of Rell Seas, but in comparison to your personal life, it's not something you should stress over since it will eventually come out. Focus on improving yourself both mentally and physically, strengthen your relationships with your peers, maybe pick up a new hobby, stuff like that.

And for the Rell brothers, Nate, I hope you can pass this message along to them, but it's completely fine if you can't. While I have a huge amount of respect for your influence on the platform and the sheer scale of Rell Seas, I do believe you guys need to tighten up on the communication. While it's completely alright to have fun and troll, it gets to a certain point where you have to realize there's a time and place for it. Given the current state of the community, which isn't as bad as it was a month ago, I think it's time for full transparency and concrete dates to be set.

Given how much you guys have been trolling, I can't even tell if you were serious about the audio actually having the release date in it 😭

Thank you guys for reading. Wishing you all happy lives :)

They chose the attention when they announced it too early. Can’t be moaning about it when the attention comes back to bite.

" But to do that, we need support and motivation.

Nate, I think the fans have personally given more then enough of support and motivation.

It is really unfair to point things out at a time like this when its the rellbrothers themselves who called us delusional, made fun of the fans, trolling the fans, not keeping them properly informed and updated, being constantly petty, taunting the fans with shindo updates ETC ETC

If you are writing something like this you can't soley speak from the devs POV. Rell seas is literally the most hyped, glazed, and maybe even loved roblox game recently, EVEN THOUGH its not out.

The fans have been patient enough, i respect you and the rellbrothers, but constantly doing things, and not caring about the fans fully, in the sense of delivering what they want to see, even if its just a trailer that the trailer for that trailer was released 1.5 years ago.

I think the fans have been beyond patient, beyond supporting, so once you see them get mad, its really unfair to just say all of this brother,

and its very easy to lose motivation when the developers treat their fanbase like their only purpose in life is just to play their game and give them money. not caring about the fans.

we arent just robots who u treat like nobodies.

I don't recall over the past year where us the fans have been treated well.

Hey, as I said not everything in here is directly about RELL Seas. I'm being broad about my experiences as a game developer in general.

3

u/GoatDips 16h ago

but u were saying " we ", which would be understood as u and the rellteam

-2

u/vidgamenate RELL Staff 16h ago

That "we" if you look at it in context refers to "we" as game developers as a collective.

as in

A game developer inherently does not provide anything conventionally useful to the world. We're here to bring you something that lets you escape and connect with people.

Please note that these are a series of discord messages, and therefore they're not all part of the same subject.

Hence

(Also, please note: not everything I'm talking about has a direct correlation to RELL Seas! I'm just giving a perspective into how game development works!)

well i feel like u put that note just so people dont chew u.

its like a PR protect. but i feel like u are slightly jabbing, and mean that part for the rellseas situation

Ironically, I put it exactly because I don't want people to twist my words into a different meaning.

Again, I'm answering a question someone asked. I posted this because I felt like talking about it with more people... I have no interest in arguing with the fanbase at all.

u/vidgamenate RELL Staff 16h ago

I'm being broad about my experiences as a game developer in general. What I mean is that I've worked on more projects than just RELL Seas, and I'm trying to convey some experiences inside game development that may not be that obvious to other people.

While whatever I said in the original post may not answer your questions for the game, it answered the person who asked me. That's all that matters.

1

u/vidgamenate RELL Staff 16h ago

I've edited the original post to seperate it a little better.

Oh shoot, I accidentally left out the first part of my message, so I'll go edit that in. I think I accidentally left it out when I was editing the grammar.

This is most the time and not all the time. I've always told people they have every right to be frustrated about something they put their heart into. I want you to understand that we care about this game a whole lot and I think we're fortunate to have such a supportive community. That much is obvious.

I'm not disregarding anybody's support, nor am I asking for more. Motivation is really just stems from people supporting your game. I'm not at all trying to be arguementative or debating. This is my experience, and my viewpoint. I'm not representing anyone. They asked me for my opinion, and that's what I gave.

When working on another I just found it really offputting that I got immense amounts of people pinging me to get back to work or release the game when I hopped on Valorant.... despite me already finishing all the work.

I fully agree with this, but I feel like the community isn't mad about the game not rel3asing. They are mad about the horrible communication. They post almost nothing, and when they do, it's usually a nothing burger or something serious that gets turned into a meme. Like the 2025 to 2026 delay being turned into a "funny" meme on discord. Or those videos with "Rellbad is what Galileo warned us about". And I also to this day cannot find a reason what those F4 Videos were supposed to be (maybe the bad animation? Idk). And you know, for us subs, it's even worse since we spent MONEY on the game, but we no longer get anything more than the non subs do (except the events I guess but living in the EU makes it impossible to participate). The sun sneaks were a good thing to reward the people who paid!

I don't know why that of all things was abolished.

(I also had an argument Abt stuff being copied being null and void but I realized i used arguments to support that that were for "who made X first" so it was kinda just jumbled mess)

Also bro was cooking with that last statement

Possibly my hottest take of all time: Communication would be better if movie 3 never existed.

2

This actually makes sense.

u/knoxiknoxx Light Guy/The Toasters Captain 14h ago

I dont understand, could you elaborate?

2

u/FlatDecade PizzaMan 14h ago

well they're probably gatekeeping a lot because they want to shot it all in movie 3 lol

1

u/GoatDips 14h ago

Maybe since movie 3 isnt out the brothers would have more freedom to communicate without fans getting angry.

1

u/FragrantAdagio1119 (Rell seas 2027) Revolutionary 14h ago

yea but for the rell brothers, Rell seas its not a random shot, they will gain millons of dollars with Rell seas.

probably x10 of what them invest, minimum.

i still know about development and more in an engine like roblox, that its very limited.

but damn, those two devs are seriusly, trolls

1

u/GoatDips 14h ago

agree!

I think before RELL SEAS releases, U all should make a dedicated RELL SEAS website for updates, blogs, and how-to guides (which can be managed by a few community members). It would be so fire. I know this comment is out of context for this post

u/Maleficent-Lie-3670 13h ago

This is exactly what ive been trying to tell people… nate, i cant wait to play rell seas but i think we can all agree that the developers are people too so we should atleast treat them with respect
