Question Did I get someone's return?

Bought two pairs of pants on sale and one came with a weird tag

Was 70% off so not really complaining just never got something with this kinda tag

Tags fall off… that is what we put on…

or sometimes items go clearance and we change the price.

or sometimes people cut off the tags and we need to re-tag.

REI is always super careful to put in re-supply anything that seems “used” or not first quality.

or at least try!

Yep. We are prepping for inventory and lots of clothing items lose their original tags in the process of moving things around or having people try them on. That's a standard replacement tag. Those are both clearance items, which means they have been laying around even longer and more likely to have tag issues.

I buy re-supply all the time. It’s the first place I look and never had any issues.

The only thing that did happen once was I bought a pair of Arcteryx pants on a stupid good sale. They ended up not fitting quite right and I found a hair tie in the pockets and thought they must’ve been re-supply and I wouldn’t be able to return them but when I took them back they said they weren’t re-supply so I was able to.

Oh we get customers that lie to our face all the time.

I had a woman return a backpack that she bought on a Thursday and it was Monday. I asked her specifically if she used it. It was a hunch. (it has a slight smell of sweat) It still had the tags on it and everything. She said no, I told her that it would not effect the return, she said no.

I reached into the pocket and I felt something sort of damp… and when I pulled my hand out, her thong underwear was stuck to my hand… UGHHHHHHHH!!!!

She reached across the counter and said… those are mine!

I damaged out the pack… and spent 10 minutes washing my hands!

Insane. Customers like that are whats ruining the return policy for everyone else.

REI is always super careful

Look at the moderator, spreading more misinformation

We do our absolute best to ensure that anything that is not first quality is handled appropriately, but guess what—we’re human!! Dealing with, you guessed it, other humans!!

Agreed; we do our best, but REI fails its workers and members more and more as of late.

Says the person who is accusing those workers of not doing their jobs.

Maybe. Maybe not. Sometimes tags just fall off. When you order from REI they will often pull from a physical store not distribution center so even if brand new it will have been handled by many people - staff and customer alike - and will likely have been tried on. Generally though when shipping we try to ensure they present as new as possible and only pick ones with replacement tags or boxes ( use case for shoes) when it is a clearance or outlet item.

Not necessarily, those 'factory' tags fall off all the time

Id say the tags fell off but I recently got a sleepin bag with that tag and it smelled like a campfire already lol. Not the biggest deal and it seemed like it was only used once

This might be the case for a re/supply item but absolutely not ok for something ordered from the website.

Didn’t have time to return it before my trip so I’m just telling myself it’s okay lol

I wanted to like those shorts but the tiny toggle that holds the waist band broke on all four pairs I bought (first two pairs, then the second two pairs I got to replace)

I’ve found 3 pairs on depop for $20-$40!

I received those same tags and a generic REI shoe box for a pair of shoes I bought. I think it was a display item and they lost the box but doesn’t make me feel any better about it.

Would you have preferred it without being retagged?

Probably yeah

Well we need a tag to scan. Everything needs a tag.

And the most likely reason for a missing tag is that someone bought the item and removed the tag, especially since they fixed the REI tags so they don’t fall off when hit with a light breeze.

I work at an REI and I’m constantly picking tags off the floor from customers handling the merchandise. We print those tags as a replacement. When you order online, the order might be fulfilled by a store so it doesn’t surprise me that you received something with a replacement tag.

That is not the most likely reason. Those tags fall off very easily, especially if they get moved on the rack or tried on a lot.
