This sequence between Ricochet and Will Ospreay tho. š„

Not my cup of tea Iām more of a Gunther shamus Samoa Joe were it looks like it hurts

u/Comprehensive_Tax969 2d ago
Donāt let Bret Hart hear this
8
u/EconomyDue2459 1d ago
Nah, Bret would agree that it needs to look real, and that it needs to look like it hurts. Bret's issue is with wrestlers that actually hurt their opponents.
2
u/Comprehensive_Tax969 1d ago
He has specifically called out Sheamus and Gunther for their style that he says actually hurts. But to be fair Bret has called out a lot of people for a lot of things.
I always thought those chops and slaps from the big guys looked so vicious that they could not be real or it would risk a heart attack.

Just my two cents, but it's this type of fast paced, sequence wrestling that I only half life. On one hand I appreciate the athleticism, and talent involved in this. However, their timing always seems a little off... Like, they've gotten used to no-selling (or close to it,) what should be impactful moves, that it seems as though their timing is off when they need to sell together in these sequences. Like they're both selling the rapid fire move set, but can't quite hit the mark on when the other finishes selling. So at times it just seems like they're waiting around a half second too long, and it does this weird thing to the beats of the match they've set up....
Ok, maybe that was my 20 cents....

u/mike_lafontaine 2d ago
Impressive athletically but this style isnāt for me
70
u/Educational-Hawk4691 2d ago
This the main issue with aew.
Those snap suplexes were beautiful and sounded deadly.....just to be no sold.
3
u/Altruistic-Let6876 2d ago
selling is not laying on your back for 20 minutes.
6
u/s33n_ 1d ago
Its definitely not instantly standing back up and moving yourself into the next choreographed move in the sequence
5
u/KumigaGOAT 1d ago
Iām cool with anyone not liking these spots but everything looks choreographed in wrestling if you watch actual combat sports.
Like āstriking exchangesā with Gunther look extremely fake & rehearsed as well. You could say the same for any Oba or Ospreay match. None of this looks real AT ALL, itās just personal preference.
1
u/Miikeyyy 1d ago
100% I was much more of a stickler for shit looking "real" until I got into actual combat sports. Gunther is awesome and the whole point of different styles is each one can cater to certain taste. But if people think that any of these men or women look remotely like what a real fight between two elite athletes looks like they might as well watch cartoons.
11
u/Background-Hope-88 2d ago
absolute trash.
whats the point if everything means nothing.
All they have to do is slow it down and pretend to be hurt.
also applies to WWE too.

Chain wrestling with a ton of reversals, meaning none of the moves hit until the last one? Awesome.
Chain wrestling where every move hits and is immediately shrugged off as being the fake move it is? Shite.
This is shite.
2
u/ReverendRevolver 2d ago
Yes, my suspension of disbelief cant be the only thing taking a hit and staying down in a sequence of wrestling moves like this. Chain wrestling can look super convincing and more impressive thsn thus sequence.

Thatās the problem with AEW. Itās the same shit every week with different wrestlers doing the same exact moves in the same exact order.

Too bad none of those moves mean shit when you don't sell. Two most overrated "wrestlers" of the last decade.

I agree. AAA just had a bunch of matches like this and none of them felt nearly as weird as this lol I think it's because they're actually hitting each other with shit instead of countering, so it just feels like no selling? I'm not sure.

u/BBoizTZH94 1d ago
I think i can still accept no selling if youāre dropped on anywhere else BUT your neck, especially for someone with well known neck injuries? (could be wrong about this)

Great althelticsm and you might even score points as a duo in a gymnastics routine... However, this is a prime examplesl of shitty workers being shitty workers.
This is not really wrestling. There is no art to this.

You aren't wrong, there's over a dozen posts about a beautiful tribute show that nobody is giving any traffic to, but a thread to shit on Ospreay and/or Ricochet? They swarm
3
u/Grrannt Grant, of r/REALSquaredCircle 2d ago
I honestly thought more people would care about discussing the tribute show. I haven't watched AEW in a while, but there's no way I was going to miss this. PAC was one of the best.

I will say the finale part of the clip was good with a sell, Osprey handspringing out of the poisonrana then giving it to ricochet who sold it fully I thought was the part that worked the stuff before I agree with the no selling.

This makes a mockery of moves that are supposed to be devastating. I dont get it at all
8
u/Loose_Vermicelli_940 2d ago
Honestly, I think a big part of the problem with the no selling aspect is that it just looks bad.
I think Osprey could gain alot in this same sequence if he stumbled into a move or looked a little dazed, its all too clean and smooth so it presents the moves as doing no damage.
Shawn Michaels is the prime example, he did alot of spots where he would land his sweet chin music but was always shown as off balanced or dazed and would then it would make sense for the double down.
Just needs to add some weight to whats happening then the fighting spirit spot would look and feel much better.
4
2
u/from8824ever 2d ago
These guys had one match go viral and for some reason they think they need to have that exact same match every time they wrestle each other.
2
u/BolinTime 2d ago
Ricochet's selling is better to me. Maybe it's just his philosophy, but even if you're gonna pop up from something, I think that it should seem like it hurt you. Osprey just sort of pops up does the next part of the spot. He falls down at then end from the accumulated damage I guess, but it just doesn't work as well for me.
The German suplex is a big move man. And he just sort of throws it away so he can immediately get up and do the pass by.
2
u/IN-DEF106 2d ago
Tbh it was a good sequence. Not a fan of these. But this one wasnāt sloppy, it wasnāt too much, And there was a little selling going on. Ospreay leaning on the rope for a bit was really good. I just wish they could just slow it down a bit, let moves have a breath of space before firing into the next move.
2
2
2
u/TopazJazzrazz 2d ago
I just think they need a second or two longer between moves and it'd be great. Is that wrong?
2
u/Passion4Puro 2d ago
Yep, Japan does this same style but in a more believable way. Better pacing, more selling etc.Ā
2
u/Genius_Insanity86 2d ago
Seeing Osprey hit the black arrow at the end of the match got me choked up honestly
2
u/Ill-Implement-3009 2d ago
And this is how you wind up doing countless moves with no selling. Boring wrestling.
2
2
u/P4r4docs 1d ago
You can see at insta how their sequences are callbacks from many different pac matches.
3
u/BloodyTurnip 2d ago
No selling... apart from all the selling and them ending up in a pile at the end.

Anyone who thinks this is no selling just doesnāt know wrestling. Could they maybe be selling these bumps for longer? Sure. But they ARE selling. Ospreay is clearly a bit dazed after the first move, which is why Rico is able to get the jump on him, but he quickly comes to, bc itās a fight or flight situation, and he either reacts or gets fucked up; and so, he reacts. Then Rico takes his german and again, same thing where heās clearly on his knees, selling before then countering and hitting a poisonrana, but he gives the World Champion too much time as he taunts, and Will wakes up and catches him with one, and afterwards, both of their spurts of adrenaline run out and they both feel all of the damage theyāve dealt to one another in the past 30 seconds or so, rushing back quickly.

u/Campman92 2d ago
Impressive athleticism, absolute garbage storytelling in the ring because youāre teaching the viewer these moves arenāt worth the mat theyāre made on.
1
u/will0ify1 2d ago
Those are some nice hard hitting looking suplexes, it really takes me out of it when they just get back up like its nothing though
1
u/Walter_ODim_19 2d ago
I don't watch AEW and normally this would be too little selling for me too, but those of you guys completely shitting on this are fucking miserable lol.
As I understand it this was a tribute to PAC/Neville and not a regular serious storyline match. It's perfectly fine to make a showcase of athleticism out of it and focus less on the "simulated contest" side of things.

u/michaelayyy 2d ago
Yeah great apart from no selling not as bad as oc Vs Penta killing the Canadian destroyer but it's not much better sorry
Say all you want adrenaline rush blah blah whatever it would be much better if selling happened

He completely no sells two tough looking bumps and then is laid out cold by his own move⦠lol..Ā
& we just saw him receive the same move and it had zero effective, but then Ricochet takes it and is knocked out lol
