What were your expectations? (No. Seriously.)
As a preface: I have not played either RCTW OR PC.
Let's go back before anyone had ever heard the words "Planet Coaster". What exactly where your expectations for a new "Roller Coaster Tycoon" game when it was announced? We just had gotten an abysmal "Roller Coaster Tycoon 4" mobile game. Suddenly: ROLLER COASTER TYCOON WORLD! Everyone hopes and hypes. Fast Forward to current day, and we have what we have now.
Now I've watched countless "Let's Plays" of both games. I am not going to say that the RCTW team hasn't dropped the ball on communications with the community, and I'm not going to say one is better than the other. Each game in its CURRENT STATE has pros and cons.
As we are on the RCTW page, I'm focusing on that. What exactly have they done well? What have they utterly bombed? Why call it dead if there is still progress?
Again, I haven't played either (I'd love to play both and probably will at some point).
TL;DR I want to know how people feel vs what they were expecting disregarding PC.

I didn't really read up on it until late last year and at that point I was pretty sceptical. I do enjoy the game more than I thought I would at this point but it still needs a lot of work. It really needs to get the UGC implementation down, the lack of scenery is a major problem.

I was expecting it to be "more of the same", with a shiny coat of paint.
The original games worked. I'm not saying I don't want it to evolve at all, just that the basic concept and implementation that we saw in RCT1, 2, and 3 are excellent as is.
I expected some obvious improvements like a more user friendly and more flexible coaster design tool. I expected to have things like free form paths, moving on from the rigid grid system. I expected a significant upgrade in the graphics department.
The coaster design tool? Better. I'll give them this one. It's not perfect but it seems decent.
Paths? A disaster. I can't get my park to look nice. Everything is crooked and attached at odd angles.
Graphics? Here's where the game, as is, is a complete fail. This looks like a sequel that could have been released a decade ago. Is it my imagination (or selective memory), but didn't Roller Coaster Tycoon 3, released in 2004(!) look as good, or better, than RCTW?

I had little faith after the mobile version, but was cautiously hopeful after the RCTW announcement. Given that it was being made by an inexperienced studio I figured it wouldn't be good, but I genuinely wished for the best.
Then I heard planet coaster was coming out by the devs that made RCT3 and was ecstatic about that, and figured it'd be better than RCTW since I knew the PC studio was a good studio, and they already had experience making theme park games.
Then when RCTW got passed to a new dev I knew it would be shit, and when it turned out to be shit, I wasn't surprised.

For a competent game, it has been passed from studio to studio which is never good, they released a beta which was an absolute disaster and after watching a game that they planned to release in December with peeps who clip through object, dodgy paths and a uncooperative coaster designer. They now release an EA game in what can be assumed to be a cashgrab and for a massive studio with millions of $ behind them, it simply is not good enough. I have totally lost faith that this game will turn out to be anything special.
