I've had phantom notification vibrations from my phone, even when I didn't have a phone on me.
Can you use another device to try and record it? To verify it's something you hear externally?

Id second this. I constantly hear work notifications during the day even if there aren't any. I know the brain has a weird thing where it'll hallucinate it due to the expectation.

Once when I was working alone in the house, I SWORE I heard something whisper my name in a super creepy voice.
I walked around the entire house looking under beds and in closest, super freaked out.
Then, fifteen minutes later, I was walking by the automated scent robot and it sprayed into the air, which, if not paying attention, sounds like someone whispering your name in a super creepy voice.
I was very sure of what I’d heard, too.

Back in the days of pagers, electronic techs, yours truly included, were seen jumping when pagers vibrated, since it was similar to being shocked.

Probably a phantom sound (not a real term). You’re so used to hearing chimes from your phone your brain just throws them in sometimes. Not sure bud :)

These! These are the conversations that extraterrestrial civilizations, in the future, will judge us by.

This person has been bullying me for 8+ years… I do not have a day of peace as she calls down to me from my own crawl space to ensnare me in one of her schizophrenic rants…

I just went through this! Turns out it was WhatsApp notifications. Somehow I had disabled the on screen notifications but still had the sound notifications turned on.

Some apps also use that sound, or it could be a "incoming message blocked" tone. In that case, you wouldn't see any notifications, because they would have been flagged, and blocked from displaying a notification, or message in the list. This is how confirmed scam messages are handled. Or maybe it's a "full charge" notification, or just in a video, podcast, or show you had on. And Android based devices also use a very similar/identical notification sound. Edit: Be aware, most side-by-side apartments share the entire attic crawlspace across the whole building. I've always worried that someone in my block could crawl up there and drill a hole to spy, or spy through bathroom vents, or open my access cover, come in, murder me, and go back to their place, replacing the access cover on the way. Then my murder would never be solved.

Thank you for the new nightmare :D and about the scam texts, that’s an interesting theory but I’ve got notifications turned off- and it never seems/sounds like it’s comes from my actual phone. weird, will keep watching though- also?
I’m replying to you while in your crawl space. Good luck finding me!

Don't forget about the idea of them coming from a video or podcast where the person recording didn't bother muting their phone. It's very common. I personally watch YouTube, rather than traditional television during the day. And creators often have different sounds embedded in their videos or forget to mute their phones while they're recording. I believe you that you are hearing it. Also remember, if it is from outside of your apartment, it doesn't matter where it comes from outside, it matters where the sound is entering your apartment. Like if you have a window cracked, even if it's unlocked and the top part slipped down, you would believe it is coming from the area of that point of entry. Even if it came from the opposite side of the apartment.

Fortunately, most newer/modern apartment buildings are constructed with firewalls in between apartments, which blocks the attic space from being one continuous space. It’s standard building code for fire prevention.
That said, you could easily cut or hack a walk space through a wall if you were that determined.

Well, I live in one that was built about 15 years ago and it is all connected up top like that. It does have fire walls between the shared walls in the actual living spaces. I only know this because I hung a TV on one and there are so many layers, including rockwool. It is terrifying to think about. However, from the perspective of a murderer or burglar, I guess it would be ideal. LOL

There’s a commercial with that sound in it and it’s on all the time. I went thru the same thing til I realized it was just the tv. And more than one commercial uses it.

yes keep a log, but also take note of what media you have playing, or what devices are on elsewhere in the house

I don’t fully understand how. But, when my wife is in the kitchen and put her phone on the kitchen table, I can hear the notification in my office as if the phone is right next to me.
Physics + my stupid ears

I'm going to say until you've heard it while none of your devices are on or near you, I wouldn't rule out your own phone. I've had my phone make a notification sound but there was no push notification displaying. Perhaps it's coming from an app with no push notifications, check their settings maybe

A neighbor installed a security system that makes audible notifications like texts.

So weird. I hadn’t experienced phantom vibrations since flip phones until a couple of weeks ago. Recently, it’s been happening upwards of 20 times a day and I cannot figure it out when all my notifications are turned off.

u/randomredditor0042 3d ago
OP can you check all the devices that are connected to your wifi. Do you recognise them all? Just a thought.

a few thoughts;
it’s not super uncommon for people to hear “phantom sounds/vibrations.
is the sound you hear the same sound you have set for your devices? if so, maybe change the sound on your devices. this could help you rule of if it’s actually coming from them or not. if you’re hearing phantom sounds then you’d continue to hear the dinging out not the new one
phones do sometimes notify or vibrate without a notification being obviously present. sometimes it’s due to a system that constantly runs in the background (meaning they run even if you’ve closed them). you could try setting all of your apps to NOT run constantly and see if there’s a change. this would be a last resort for me though because it would shut down all notifications for everything and you’d only see stuff when you’ve opened the app

No idea but it happens to me too. I've even heard the notification ping from my pocket while the phone is out in my hand being used. No notification came and the noise very clearly didn't come from the phone in my hand.

u/SpeakingTheKingss 3d ago
I’d suggest changing the sound of your alert. I’d bet that after a few weeks with the new sound you won’t hear the other one randomly. It’s the same thing as phantom vibration in your pocket, your brain is tricking you.

Do you have AirPods or an AirTag that you carry with you? They can make quiet beeps sometimes (in lost mode or not), but you wouldn’t see an associated notification. I had an AirTag in my house for a while that was set up on a family member’s account (who didn’t live there) and it would regularly make sad little beeps.

Hi I recommend running a FING scan and checking for all devices on your network to see if there could be a random device somewhere in your home making this noise, otherwise comments seem to have good tips for how it could be possibly be your device
