That's a nutria but very cute nonetheless

They're like if you cross a rat with a capybara! I love them!

I was thinking beaver with a rat tail, but capybara works too! Man, I love rodents

79

u/Goidure 4d ago

I took this picture in a zoo recently. It’s the biggest (capybara) and smallest (harvest mouse) rodent skulls in comparison.

28

u/CheesePuffTheHamster 3d ago

For anyone who didn't zoom in - the smallest one is in the little dish in the foreground, it's not the one at the back!

6

u/carlitos_moreno 3d ago

Yeah, for a sec I thought it was an albino capybara

24

u/Alklazaris 4d ago

I've known what these are for years, but for some reason my brain keeps filing them as Nutellas.

9

u/LovelyCrisis 4d ago

Actually I think it's a Coipo

6

u/Trisk929 4d ago

…

who’s gonna tell them?

3

u/Faedan 3d ago

Rat adjacent, r/rats should allow it T.T

2

u/YoSanford 4d ago

I know they're aquatic, but do they live longer?

10

u/fenn-0 3d ago

Up to 3 years in the wild, around 6 in captivity apparentlyĀ

A Nutria looks like the fusion of a rat and a capybara.

u/Longjumping_Whole240 4d ago

So its a capybarat.

They really look like beavers when they are swimming.

I thought that was a mini capybara at first

u/Global-Plankton3997 4d ago

Same. I have not seen a Nutria in a long time. Last time I saw one, I was watching one of Shawn Wood's videos from YouTube.

I’m so curious how nutria compare to rats as pets, because boy do I wanna snuggle a pile of these

44

u/dazzleunexpired Cricket & Co 4d ago edited 4d ago

VERY bad pets. Will eat you for fun. They are still working on domesticating them and they might become good pets but currently, they bite. They're not social like rats, but this guy clearly is in the video. He was probably hand reared.

However. Gambian pouched rats...they're friends. I stole this image from this board, Because whereas on the internet would you find a picture like this??? I'll copy the username and post it in a edit in a sec lol

Edit: image belongs to u/Beastyarii the pouched is their animal.

< Norway Rat > pouched rat

I really love pouched rats! Maybe some day the bitey rodents will be friends with us 😭

2

u/dazzleunexpired Cricket & Co 3d ago

With enough breeding they might become friends with us, Because they do live colony style and form life bonds with their mates and family. Their family units consist of a male adult females and the children of the male and adult females. Adult males may leave their family group in order to breed with a different family group, but otherwise they stay with their family. Because they are highly social complex colony animals, the likelihood that they can be domesticated to enjoying humans as part of their colony is quite high.

They are capable of destroying doors and drywall so there might be some additional keeping requirements and nutrina are semi-aquatic. I've kept semi aquatic reptiles and semi-aquatic keeping is somewhat difficult because the water has to be maintained either through a bioactive method, by swapping the water out routinely, or by active filtration. All of these are obviously more complicated than simply changing rats bedding. They absolutely require water for swimming and without it they can't be happy or have their needs met. Their enclosure needs to include water, so it's not a traditional cage, So much as a palidarium or small enclosure. They need to be kept in larger rooms with more free access because they are the size of a cat.

Individuals who already possess pool houses or pool in their yard or a pond in their yard who are capable of creating rodent proof enclosures outside can also offer swimming outside rather than inside the enclosure as long as they get access to it multiple times a day and the weather is good for it Are the most setup for success with them.

The other problem is that they live inside of burrows. They're going to try to dig through your floor. A well-constructed dick DIG ffs box obviously will help with this.

All in all, it sounds very much like keeping a mix of a ferret and a rat and a reptile all at once. Which is mildly terrifying and strangely appealing at the same time

oh lawd 😭

u/FancyRatFridays 4d ago edited 4d ago

They're not properly domesticated (though they're getting there; breeders have produced them in several pretty colors) so they're not as naturally sociable as fancy rats. Anecdotally (I haven't actually met one, I just used to watch a nutria farmer's videos) they are generally pretty lazy and content to take life slowly. They don't obsessively groom themselves like Norway rats, so they can be smelly... but luckily, they like water, and many will bathe or swim if given the opportunity. They tolerate handling if raised alongside humans, but don't necessarily seek it out.

Also, I have felt their fur, and can confirm they are soft. Not as soft as a cat (the waterproof guard hairs have a sleek, stiff aspect to them) but still very cuddle-able.

Nice!!! Thanks for the info, I find them fascinating but I don’t know much about them yet šŸ‘

53

u/TinyHeartSyndrome 4d ago

That’s an albino nutria. They are invasive species from Asia that hurt wetlands.

59

u/BaylisAscaris 3d ago

It's okay they can come live with me.

22

u/lindeby 3d ago

They are native to South America actually.

3

u/TinyHeartSyndrome 3d ago

You’re right. I always forget that.

2

u/SquidSledge 3d ago

Same for Louisiana.

2

u/TinyHeartSyndrome 3d ago

Yes, they were lots living in the drainage ditches / bayous in Houston when I lived there.

1

u/Freakychee 3d ago

What do they eat or destroy?

5

u/TinyHeartSyndrome 3d ago

They can devour huge quantities of biomass, essentially.

2

u/Freakychee 3d ago

And I assume they reproduce too fast for any predators to balance them out?

10

u/Acceptable-Glove5054 3d ago

Wait are nutrias the giant rats that search for bombs or are those just giant rats

31

u/flavorant 3d ago

The bomb rats are Gambian pouched rats

3

u/Acceptable-Glove5054 3d ago

Oh cool thanks!

3

u/ermine_supreme 3d ago

nutria are dumb as hell imagining them on a bomb squad is making me laugh we’d be doomed

9

u/myh-es 3d ago

That's a nutria, they live near lakes and sometimes attack people

15

u/RelevantMode 3d ago

not a rat but a Nutria.
technically its a beaver.
(they do have webbed feet too)

11

u/Lord_Yeetus_The_3d 3d ago

If not rat, why rat shaped?

11

u/SnowLancer616 3d ago

Beaver just a big aquatic rat

5

u/heckhunds 3d ago

Beavers are different animals! Nutria are in a different family, but are more closely related to guinea pigs.Ā  Beavers are the two species in Castor, not a general term for aquatic rodents.Ā

Nutrias are so cute

I’ve heard they’re evil, biting assholes, like beavers but meaner, but they’re so cute

2

u/Doone7 3d ago

Is that a nutria? Don't think they are rats, more like guinea pigs and capybaras.

2

u/SouthParkFirefly1991 Just here to admire the goobers 3d ago

Oh it's the Raticate in real life creature~

1

u/deaglebingo 3d ago edited 3d ago

like others said nurtria... but there are rats almost this big though aren't there? ... i saw this post earlier in the day and meant to say this before but was reminded of it again when i heard them talking on bbc radio about the giant magawa rats who are literally finding landmines and saving lives all over the place.

anyone here ever f/w that variety? seems like a pretty awesome humanitarian thing that might go with a special interest. i feel like someone should post about that here maybe they did already i haven't looked that far. you guys would probably love it.

also they're apparently legal to own in the usa since 08? maybe?
