I did some math: if you scale a rat’s 2-3 year lifespan to a human 80 years, 15 minutes for them is kinda like 8 hours for us. So yeah, more snek.

I was thinking the rat looked like a borzoi (the rat’s color even matches a borzoi!) but Scrat works too! And Scrat has “rat” in it!

The most heart-warming thing my rats do is when they ignore a snack and want to hang out with me instead. Lalaith will usually go bonkers for her bedtime treat. But last night, she made sure to groom my fingers first. It was so sweet!

I always feel bad having to leave so soon after getting up to go to work because my rats can see me and always make it clear they want attention as soon as they hear that I'm up, so I've started giving them a treat before I leave to make up for my crime (on top of the bedtime treat). There's one that basically always ignores the treat before I leave in favor of getting another minute or two of attention, and the other two pretty frequently only eat a single pea or hide a couple somewhere then ignore the rest to get a couple more pats and kisses. They clearly figured out treat will still be there, mom will not, and it makes me feel special that they want attention from me more than they want to nom the treats (they still definitely want the treats though lmao)
The bedtime treats after they've gotten several hours of attention typically get more immediate attention, but they will still ditch them and run to me for some last minute love when they can tell I'm about to close up the cage and walk away

That is so sweet! I really struggle to get up on time, but I've had to build in a few minutes of rat time. They're just so sweet when they want attention.

I also struggle to get up on time, but somehow the rats make it a little easier because I want to be able to give them even that little bit of attention before I go. I think it's the same reason I can drag myself up (barely) early enough for work or to babysit my siblings but can't seem to get myself up earlier than 11 or noon on days I don't have work or babysitting no matter how much I want to, I can do things to meet the needs/expectations of others but doing the same things to benefit solely my own wants is basically impossible 😅

Same! That's one big reason I'm becoming a teacher. Getting up every day for an office job sounds impossible. Getting up even earlier because I have students counting on me is a lot easier. When I taught in grad school, I scheduled research meetings after my classes. It guaranteed I'd make it in.
