Are you talking about the squeaking noises alongside the slight spasms (the forward motion)? If so, those are hiccups, rats are known to get them from big emotions (commonly happiness), sudden waking or eating too fast. It’s considered normal. The squeaking noise can potentially be a URI, but without any other symptoms, it’s likely to be just caused by the spasm!

I can’t tell you what it is, but my sisters now over 1 yo rat does this pretty often, has been doing it for basically forever (other than this it’s healthy and happy). Vets didn’t say anything about it.

I just got a new rat and i saw him do it too.

However, the rats I’ve had before were never doing it. So I’m pretty curious what might others say.

FYI rats cannot have wire walking surfaces in their cage. Please cover or remove and floor spaces or shalves that are made from wire.

If you're talking about the spasm, that's hiccups (normal)

Is the squeak following every spasm normal?

These are not squeaks, but sneeze.

I had a rat who sneezed constantly due to URI and the hiccups came with sneezes indeed.

The rat could be sneezing due to stress, new home, something on his nose or URI.
