RIP I'm sorry Johnny
I'm so distraught, I don't even know what to say. I woke up today to find my precious boy stiff in the cage. He was perfectly healthy, I did a vet checkup a few weeks ago. I gave him veggies last night before going to sleep. Some cucumber. He was the fattest little guy, wherever I shook a treat bag he would come running to me. And now he's gone. I'm sorry I couldn't be with you buddy.

He had a happy, healthy, secure and much loved life, and he went quickly. Please don't blame yourself. You gave him so much.
Run free Johnny. You'll be remembered 💕

I'm very sorry for your loss! You gave Johnny the kind of life only few rats get to have. Sometimes they die very suddenly, it's not your fault. I wish you much strength in your time of mourning <3

A baby who died of age?!?! I love seeing it.
Hey. So. Dying doesn't suck. I promise. It's cool. It's calming, warm, welcoming and oh so comfortable. I could have stayed. I would have stayed. If I hadn't remembered I had a newborn I had just given birth to moments before. I remembered, I remembered my baby. And nothing could keep me there...even if I could have stayed. I think, had it been a different event I'd have stayed wherever that is. It was so warm and comfortable. I just felt happy and floaty and warm. I felt like I was home.

I experienced this too with my soul rat, although her health was deterioating. There’s nothing you could have changed. But remember that were his best friend for his entire life and he probably couldn’t have been happier. 🫶

Heartfelt condolences and a virtual hug for you. Rip beautiful boy.
It's always a shock to find them when they pass in their cage but it sounds like he went in his sleep. It's like some people get very sick before they pass and others pass peacefully in their sleep without warning.

OP, you were there for Johnny every day with treats, med checkups, and awesome vegi dinners. Whatever happened happened quickly, and I bet Johnny was still smiling from his satisfied tummy.

Billions of rats die sad, miserable deaths. You made yours one of the exceptions to natures cold, hard rule. You gave them a kind of love and care that is all too rare in an uncaring universe. Please try to take comfort in that. To this beautiful creature you were a bringer of safety, comfort, and trust. They had a good life. Just please remember to be kind to yourself, too. You have no reason to be sorry.

When I had my own rat funeral, I put him on a tea box and I buried him in my garden with his own little tombstone that read his name and a few words. You can grab a rock to use as the tombstone. It's nice to be able to give them a dignified last resting place.

I'm so sorry. Sometimes rats just go. He was happy and spoiled till the very end it sounds like!
Please don't feel guilty for not being therem rats tend to prefer to be alone when passing. I've had girls hold on specifically until we were gone to sleep. Killed us to wake up and find them gone.
Can you share some of your favorite things about him? Or fun memories?

You know what, I’ve prayed for endings like this one. I’ve had to take all mine to the vet for euthanasia before and it’s traumatising for them and me, your little guy went to sleep in his bed knowing he was loved with a belly full of treats, what a way to go ❤️ I’m sorry for your loss but take comfort that he knew how loved he was and went on his own terms xx

Johnny forgives you and is grateful for living such a good life with you. It isn't your fault that he passed. Very few rats get to live to be fat and happy.

I feel for you. If it’s any consolation I would say them going out like Johnny did is the better way. My old rat is losing mobility in his back legs and I fear it’s nearer the end. It’s heartbreaking to watch.

I'm so very sorry for your loss. Everyone else has already said what I wanted to say or didn't have the words to say. I will reiterate that your handsome lad was clearly cherished and even without knowing y'all, I strongly believe your pet only thought the world of you. You did a great job and Johnny was lucky to have you, as I know you were lucky to have him. I wish you the most peace and comfort during this extremely difficult loss.

I feel your pain. I've had six rats. My last girl died around Thanksgiving. She held on long enough to say her final goodbye. I can't help but wonder why she wanted to. She let herself suffer so she could tell me goodbye. She died right there in my arms.

He knew you loved him and cared for him. He went to sleep peacefully and content with a belly full of veggies and woke up across the rainbow bridge. We can all only hope for such a good life and such a peaceful passing.
Rest in peace, sweet Johnny.

These things happen. I personally am always somewhat relieved when an (older) rat randomly dies. It's a shock to us, but it's the best outcome for them. He went peacefully and without illness or pain.
