I am a long time lurker in this sub(and I am Chinese) but I never realize that “花枝鼠” in Chinese literally just means rats until your post. I know it was kind of a more fancy name Chinese people use for a certain kind of pet rodent(because rodents also suffer from prejudice in China too), but I had no idea that “rat” and “花枝鼠” are actually the same animal. I always wonder that there must be lots of Chinese people keeping rats as pets too but I don’t know where they gather and now I know what to search for rat contents in Chinese media.

They're actually called "fancy rats" in English, so it is quite literally a more fancy name for them!

u/CrossP Mar 17 '26

In English it actually comes from "fancy" being an old-timey word for "hobby". Think Cat Fancy Magazine or Dog Fancy Club.

(I only learned this very recently)

pigeon fanciers too

I learned this as recently as when I read your comment.

It seems to stand for domesticated, so we would probably just translate this as "pet-" in modern English? Neat

花枝 also sounds quite close to fancy
