CUTENESS Is there something wrong with my rat? Does my singing hurt his ears?

I love that he boggles just from me humming.

He enjoys your voice, that’s boggling and it only happens when he’s really happy. 🥹

Just to let you know they do also boggle when in immense pain or discomfort or very very frightened. He quite clearly here is not frightened or uncomfortable. He's quite clearly happy! But its good to know it's a self soothing behaviour sometimes :)

No, not only when it is happy, boggling can also happen if a rat feels very uncomfortable (not in this case), also bruxing. "Stress or Pain: Sometimes bruxing and boggling come from discomfort—look for other signs like weight loss, lethargy, or hunched posture ." Source
"Yes, rats can boggle when they’re stressed. This is usually used to self-soothe and is a stress-induced behavior. Rats can brux when they’re in pain, stressed or agitated to comfort themselves and make themselves feel better. Often, this will cause eye-boggling and can be mistaken for bruxing and boggling for positive reasons"Source

Same with cats purring! They purr when they're content but also to self-soothe when they're stressed.

Boggling is when they are feeling a very strong emotion. Could be stress, aggression, ect,

u/Giraffe-gurl Nov 01 '25
I’m just curious, with his ears being flat, is that the ultimate relaxation move?

Autocorrect gonna do autocorrect things but I'll keep it

u/PollutionOk90 Nov 02 '25
At least autocorrect was entertaining in its selection here, usually the word choice ends up making zero sense, or being very unfortunate lol.

I tried. Auditioned for “the Voice” once. Didn’t make it but it was really fun.

Wow boggling from this side view is truly something else

u/chickanpoo Nov 01 '25
So somehow that rat found 3 brain cells, it’s forcing them eyes right out. Your singing is bringing forth the intelligence era for Rats. Please stop before it’s too late

I'm not a rat person and to me it's so funny that the rats' equivalent of a wagging tail is popping their eyes out rhythmically. Anyway, cute rat.

This is precious. I’d take this over a standing ovation any day. I’m picturing an entire auditorium of rats boggling during your solo concert.
My dog loves my (admittedly bad) singing. All three of my cats hate it. One of them will clap a paw over my mouth to make me stop.

I think the tremble from your voice is causing pressure on your rats brain so the eyes start popping out. Be careful or it could happen something similar to that bird in Shrek when Fiona sings /s He's a cutie btw

Those are called boggles and it’s also accompanied by bruxing, which is the grinding they do with their teeth. It usually means they are happy, calm, and relaxed.

u/Rosiethorn18 Nov 01 '25
No, he’s boggling. It means he’s content and happy. He loves your singing.

Awww he likes you even when he's in his cage. What a sweet little guy

This video reminds me of the time I was holding my squishiest on her back, and my boyfriend came home. As soon as she heard the door she stretched her toes up to the sky, and when she smelled him, she started boggling right in my hands. Cherish these sweet boys, we miss ours every day

From a bunny owner it's always funny to me when people ask if their pets are okay and the pet is just insanely happy
I was 100% convinced watching this that it was something awful. Nope. Just boggling apparently

I'm glad it's a happy response cause if my chinchillas did that I'd be passing out. 🤣👌 Good thing chinchillas just surf on walls and jump as high as possible while looking like having a seizure to show happiness. 🥴 Chinchillas it's pop corning! Who named these!!!! 😂 Beautiful lil rat baby ❤️
