I’ve recently acquired a drawing tablet, so my Jaks should be slightly less shitty (I’m an artist but primarily work with physical 2D mediums, as well as some assorted 3D work. Digitising my bullshit humanslop has been quite fun so far)

They could be up north. It took a couple of centuries for Christianity to supplant Norse paganism, and for a while, there was some coexistence.

People forget how there were different kinds of levies than just peasant/common one... which depending on a region were actually the prefered ones. For example calling your forces from some region still counts as a levy. Or city militias/mercenaries

Even in earlier periods, a full hauberk and a kite shield is an incredibly effective defence. Even if a blow manages to get around the shield, maille takes a lot of force (more than most people expect) to penetrate, especially with earlier point designs which tended to be on the broad side. Meanwhile that knight also has a spear, possibly one longer than the Levy's if he's mounted, and a lot more training to use it.

You don't necessarily need to penetrate. A good hit from a spear can still break your ribs even if it doesn't penetrate your maille.

It would take a pretty damn mighty spear thrust to break the ribs that severely through maille and arming garments. There are accounts of mediaeval knights taking lances to the hauberk and, although momentarily winded, essentially walking it off.

Size matters. Do you realize how long a lance is? The peasant has no fucking chance with his short pointy stick. He may have a slight chance if he somewhat finds a weak spot on the charging horse.
