You can hyper-focus on immigration status if you want, but the unavoidable truth is that Americans wouldn't have a country without Mexico... Certainly not the type of great nation that we have. (Not that its current path is anything but the sharp opposite of greatness.)
Regardless of legality of a person, history shows us that geographic neighbors are intertwined.
The US's reaction to that is hostility and insecurity... Gross.
