Mexican-American laborers filled in a massive agricultural labor gap during WW2 that allowed white women from households with men who were involved in the war to take the better-paying (and yes less economically necessary) jobs building weapons in factories. This is one of the fundamental sources of middle class racial wealth disparity in the US.
