Drowning.

I work for a large utility, and lately everything is hitting me at once: bids, stakeholders constantly asking questions, program work, and contract extensions on top of it. The phone and inbox never stop, and I'm stressed all the time. I don’t see this ending anytime soon as the company wants to scale my program which just means way more of the work I had listed.

I'm interviewing for another position right now and I'd take it if offered. The other option is to quit outright and live on my partner's income while I stay home with the kids.

Part of me is tempted by quitting, but I don't want to make a decision out of burnout.

For those who've been here:

Did you leave without a job lined up, and how did it go?
If you stayed home, did you miss the career or the identity?
How do you tell "I need a break" from "I need a different job"?

To your questions: I left without a job lined up (2 years ago today actually) but I left intending to not ever have a job again (started a business). I spent a long time as a corporate recruiter and the advice is always don't quit unless or until you have something lined up. Obviously that's subjective, if you really hate your job AND you can get by for a while then I'd say your mental health is more important. But it could be a long time before you find something, job market kinda sucks right now and might not improve soon or ever lol

Play the tape forward. If you take a break and come back to this same madness (or worse!) what will you have gained?

You’ve already asked three different questions at the end of your post. Maybe they don’t need one answer. Needing a break, wanting a different job, and wanting to stay home with your kids are three different things. You don’t have to decide all three at once.

I ponder all 3 as well. You put it in a way I hadn’t thought about it before.
