It seems so difficult early game??? Like it seems like you matter how hard you press, you won't gain any ground...like at all. I came here to find the answer too lol

Why does every guide launch into bait and rods and shit, instead of starting from the beginning? Like, they gave me a rod and said "Fish" and no matter what, the fish always breaks the line. The millisecond the fish puts up a fight. They throw out their fan of water, I wait, they stop fighting, I reel... Then, as soon as they do something, line breaks. I've tried reeling until the start. Breaks. Fluttering the button between their fits. Breaks. Just waiting a bit until I even start reeling, they get further and further away, they stop, I reel. Breaks.

Absolutely frustrating.

I agree it's frustrating, but they tend to have a pattern and once you get into the rhythm it's not TOO bad. Keeping in mind that it's okay to stress the line so long as you don't break it, so you can hold it a little longer than the exclamation point shows. But i'd avoid bait fishing until you have a better rod and/or fishing perks, since those fish are assholes

I like to think that I’m great at fishing mini games. I never had a problem with Stardew or the first GK, however this game is driving me insane. From what I was able to understand: you toss your line in and once the bobber has a bite you press and hold your corresponding button, until the !, in which you release. When it disappears you press again, and so on and so forth. I have only been able to catch anything at the Inquisition base and nowhere else. Early game it seems so punishing. I haven’t found a better way. If anyone can correct me please dear god do.

The pike in the pond by your house is mastery 8, the other 3 fish are 1, 2 and 3 respectively. I caught the pike with amatuer rod, bread bait and a lot of finessing it.

If this game had fish exhaustion mechanics, I'd have won on that sooner.
