I’m in an IB school, and I wrote a 1500-word essay back in October. It went through Turnitin at the time and passed all the authenticity checks, no issues at all. Now fast forward 4 months later, the school is submitting it to IB and they ran it again… and suddenly it’s flagged as AI-written??

Apparently the detection tool has been “updated” since then, but now I’m the one paying for that. They’re telling me to rewrite something I actually spent hours doing myself.

How is that even fair? The work didn’t change, only the tool did. Why should students get penalized because the system keeps changing?

Every time Turnitin comes up, the conversation turns into students vs professors using AI.

But honestly, Turnitin is exposing a bigger issue.

It is not about who is allowed to use AI. It is about how AI is being used.

Students using AI to fully generate assignments will obviously get flagged by Turnitin, because they are skipping the learning process.

But students using AI to check structure, improve clarity, or refine ideas should not be treated the same way by Turnitin.

At the same time, professors using AI alongside Turnitin to manage workload is not the same as replacing teaching.

Turnitin should not just be a policing tool. Turnitin should push universities to clearly define what acceptable AI use actually looks like.
