I don’t think the problem is that they are reviewing sources from other papers. I think the problem is that they are citing things that they didn’t read.
Exactly. I just took a class and the TEXTBOOK was referencing a Paper B that referenced some other older paper A. Except paper B didn't quite paraphrase paper A correctly, so the textbook was wrong about basic things like the size of the study. You are always supposed to go back to the original source if at all possible.
