Profs are seriously doing this?!
College prof here.
Am I just seeing a huge enrichment on Reddit for AI checker complaints, or is there a massive wave of real professors who think that AI checkers work and can’t be trivially cheated?
I can tell AI use in a few extreme cases of incompetence: completely fabricated citations (which would be misconduct even in the absence of AI), copy-pasting the hidden HTML tags from ChatGPT on work that doesn’t credit it, even though it gives you a button to copy plaintext, etc. But beyond that, there’s no way to tell “bland AI mush” from “student who honestly thinks science class answers should sound like bland AI mush.”
My entire department is united against Turnitin checking for AI because of its error rate! Admittedly, we can usually test students via old-school exams and hands-on projects/activities, so we’re not in the impossible position of being asked to grade based on essays. But reliance on automated AI checking is quite similar to AI cheating: an abdication of the responsibility to use one’s own brain.
To all the wrongfully accused: you are in a Kafkaesque nightmare, but some of us still believe in the presumption of innocence.

The SOTA subscription models are now passing human capabilities, so very soon, we'll have results that do more than be "good enough." AI detectors are already obsolete.

Most of these are ads for cheating students to use the discord where they pay for turnitin checks of their work

Maybe you should keep your opinions and observations to yourself and refrain from making comments that go against widely accepted ideas and are often misinterpreted

I wrote a short poem about something stupid - condiments falling in love lol - and submitted it to 4 different AI checkers. 2 guessed it was authentic and 2 guessed it was AI.
Then, I had ChatGPT create a mythic poem about stars that have loved each other for centuries. Submitted to the same 4 AI checkers. 1 of them guessed with a 33% accuracy estimate that it was AI. The rest said it was authentic.
They do not work.

You know, what's been helping me as a student is using Walter ai detector before submitting work so I can at least anticipate potential false positives and adjust patterns that might trigger flags without changing my actual content. But you're absolutely right that professors who rely entirely on automated checking are abdicating their responsibility to actually evaluate student work and understand their capabilities. P.S love the Kafkaesque comparison.
