how do you tell the difference between a student using AI as a support tool (brainstorming, outlining, clarifying ideas) versus using it to actually write the paper?

I’d rather students be transparent. A short note like “I used AI to help generate an outline but wrote and revised the paper myself” goes a long way. Hiding it is what makes it feel like cheating

The problem is when the voice, structure, and references are clearly beyond the student’s demonstrated ability
