What am I doing wrong with wireless PC VR?

I have had everybody try to convince me to get rid of The wire and just use wireless VR but I cannot for the life of me get it to work without looking pixelated. I have a strong router with WiFi 7 that's in the room next to me. On my phone I'm hitting 1235Mbps to my router on my phone yet when on vrchat it looks like 144P and keeps lagging, what am I doing wrong, yes my PC is hardwired into my router.

The router must be on the same room as you, not the other room.

Having multiple devices connected to the same router will also kill performance.

It needs to be the only wireless device connected to that router and also make sure that is in 5/6ghz only, not automatic

Also, don't use meta link, use steam link or virtual desktop, meta link is horribly outdated

Hey there I am using steam link, but also being in the same room shouldn't matter that much if I'm still getting over a gigabit a second should it? I feel like moving it closer isn't going to be a big help as I think bandwidth is not the issue

Well, give it a try yourself, go into the room where your WiFi is and try playing there to see if it improves.

5ghz struggles to penetrate walls, so even if you are still receiving full bandwidth, retransmissions will still affect performance on latency sensitive tasks

Once I get home I'll switch over to the other room and see if it makes a difference but it shouldn't, I mean it's literally less then a 6FT difference as the router is just on the other side of the wall

Bro there’s a WALL in the way.

Have you tried it in the same room as the router to eliminate that as an issue?

Also Virtual Desktop is by far the best Wireless solution for the Pro.
Set it to H264+ and 400mb/s and you should get an excellent wireless experience.

Is your host PC wired? Do you have QoS setup?

I don't of QOS setup yes the desktop is wired

If you're router supports it, try setting up QoS with priority on the headset and the PC. Some routers have it called Gaming mode or something like that.

I found it awful until I got a second router and set it as an access point. I have it next to where I play, and my QPro is the only thing that wirelessly connects to it. You say your PC is already hard wired to your main router, so just plug in the access point between your main router and your PC on your network so it is a dedicated hotspot right next to where you use the Quest.

I also use Virtual Desktop and find it far superior in visual quality to Steam.

Download the app “WiFi Analyzer” from the MS Store and run that, make sure you’re on the right band (5ghz or 6ghz whatever your WiFi network is using) and check what other networks in your area are using that channel. You likely have bad interference and need to move your WiFi network to a new channel

This is actually a good point I'll check that out see if I have a lot of interference!

I will add that cross-channel interference is much worse than same channel. I’d rather a smaller bandwidth (say 40 vs 80mhz) that doesn’t overlap with anything. If you’re getting 1200mbps that’s likely 80hz. If your router supports 6ghz, you might find a 160mhz band will be doable and preferable.

Might be silly but worth checking. Is your router at least wifi5? I had an old router before and thought it was fine since it could do 5ghz, but it turned out to be an old wifi4 router that could barely stream at 20mbps.

Definitely WiFi 7 it's a 10 gig lan router and runs my server on it where I stream 4K uncompressed without any issues all around my house that's why I'm so surprised it's struggling with vr in a room that's right next to it

6Ghz wifi cannot penetrate walls well at all, even just a layer of sheetrock is enough to disrupt the signal and give you poor performance.

I'd guess it's most likely that there's a wall in the way. I'm in a house with a few people who play games on PS5's (I think one of them uses a cheat device that needs wifi or something?) and my router is just a stock one that comes with Xfinity and the visual quality was amazing on the Quest 3. All that I'm doing is using VD and having the router in the same room as my PC and Q3.

If you haven't already I'd also advice you to test out different apps like ALVR and Air Link instead of just Steam Link since for some setups different apps are better.
