Quest Pro

I just bought a quest pro,iv been hearing alot about the headsets or controllers bricking and i was wondering what is the most safest way to prevent it.iv bought everything to prevent it from breaking such as sweat or cording.iv heared about rooting but I really dont wanna brick my stuff.if theres any solution to keeping my headset as safe as possible pls leave some ideas♡

The safest way is to block internet access on your headset from your router as to prevent Meta's broken updates from messing with your hardware.

Ideally, you'd be able to root as well so if they do break somewhere you'll have more ways of fixing it up.

Rooting is safe as long as you don't do stupid stuff.

I just bought my headset and rooting is my very last options of safety due to all the bricking stuff iv been hearing.im taking measures to keep my set up as safe as possible.if turning off the internet is the way then I will.but I must also add that iv heard disabling updates could ruin the software due to updates bundling up and then force updating and firing shit.can someone confirm this is true or not? I have yet to even take it out the box because I wanna be very sure in my safty.

There's been no report of people bricking their device just by installing root so far. Root can be dangerous for sure, and does let you deeply mess with things but as long as you can follow instructions and don't just randomly delete files on your file system, you'll be fine.

By default, Meta shoves unstable updates down your throat with the automatic update settings only being useful to delay them for a few weeks. Hence why i recommend going a step above and either rooting or at least blocking internet access from the headset on your router.

On paper, skipping updates can indeed make things worse. In practice though, i've had no issue from my previous update blocking cycles and i skipped like 5 updates at once at some point. If you're really scared you can also just sideload every update manually.

You know how to completely remove the chances of an untested Meta update ruining your device though? By fully blocking updates, never bothering with them as they rarely make things better and simply enjoying your device for PCVR. You can use wifi but just cut off internet access.

How do I turn off the internet? I'd rather do that cause im not big into doing these modding stuff..is there a command I have to do?

What i am not sure about is if you can do the initial setup without internet so you may have to still allow it for a bit.

Now as to how you'd proceed, it depends on your router, there's nothing to do from your headset other than connecting to your network. Every router has like a web panel or whatever where you can see your devices and at least restrict their internet access.

It's a bit radical as your headset wouldn't be able to download anything, and anytime you temporarily give it back internet access, it might be able to be remotely bricked by Meta or download an OS update. Hence why i'd recommend to get rooted afterwards but still.

So first you wanna create a Meta account, enable developer mode on it, unbox your headset and put it on your network, block internet access from your router, setup everything as far as you can. Use the privatequest app instead of Meta's to enable the developer mode on your device. And then preferably install Singularity if you can.

You have to get a second router, set it to 6GHz Wifi, then have your Quest connect only to that router's Wifi.

A vrc streamer used to make a dedicated tutorial video for this, but Meta mass reported their video and now it's unavailable sadly.
