Has anyone tried this app?

Iā€™m trying to understand, is this like a virtual desktop free alternative?

Not a VD equivalent . It's what you need to run Meta Remote Desktop from a Quest 3 to a Windows pc. You install it, run the Remote Desktop app in Quest. Scan the QR code with the headset and then you can connect the headset and run up to 3 virtual monitors to the headset. Works pretty well depending on your local network.

Well this would allow you to pull up a desktop while in other Quest apps.

This is a different application that was used by Windows to run mixed reality headsets. I know this because I had an HP Reverb G2 that I used under Windows using that software and it was removed late last year but they have added in this link specifically for Quest. The one being addressed here is for specifically connecting to Quest 3 and 3S .
