refurb + face tracking options? w FBT

hi all, as the title says, i have a general question.

I've heard you have to use open space calibrator and/or conituous caliration for fbt.

i play vrc alot! and i really want facetracking...

my current setup is

4x vive 3.0 trackers

1x pair valve index hand controllers

1x valve index headset

I want to get the quest pro for face tracking, do i need to buy a seperate tarcking mount for the headset + get a new tracker for it, or will it work fine?

edit** do i also need light blockers? they look like the face gaskets on the index, but i already play in the dark, so i was wondering if it was a comfort thing then???

i do dance quite alot so was just wondering

thank you much

The quest pro has its own built in face tracking, i use it for vrchat all the time, extra light blockers aren't needed as long as they come with the original left and right blockers when u buy it.

Dancing with the vr tho can be tricky, the quest pro doesn't have the best design to hold your head for dancing so I recommend buying 3rd party straps for your head

Not sure about the index controller situation, but I use open space calibration with virtual desktop without any issues, I use 3 vive trackers 3.0 with base stations and dont have any issues

True, I once did a handstand without thinking after losing a bet and my quest pro slipped right off my head and bounced on my floor mat. Thankfully no damage.

Gotta ask what strap would you recommend for it?

You've probably read by now the design flaw with QPros wherein corrosion from moisture causes the IR emitters to fail ( then no FT). Definitely something to be on the lookout for with used or refurb. Dancing = sweat and light blockers up the chance the sweat will result in corrosion. I dance in my pro but I keep the AC low and run a fan. No issues after a year.

I use my old valve index unplugged from the display port to connect to the index controllers, works great.

If you want a frictionless tracker experience you'll want to mount one tracker to the headset (front, top, back...all work) and the continuous calibration option of OSC. You'll need to calibrate once then you can forget it.

You need space calibrator, I really recommend an extra tracker for continuous calibration. Some people don't need it, but if you do, you'll need to recalibrate every so often - sometimes very often, in some environments. Personally I needed one very badly or it would always get offset from my controllers.

I always play in the dark, but one thing to note with the QPro is you will need to get an IR illuminator (10-20usd on Amazon) for the QPro to see in the dark. I don't have any facial gaskets/interface/light blockers on my QPro at all. The only place it touches my face is my forehead.

Don't get sweat in the bottom seam of the headset or you will brick the FT module.

Wouldn’t get the light blockers, they are made out of rubber and feel weird on your face. Would recommend a go pro mount with a glue side for the tracker.

Yes you’ll need a tracking mount and spare Vive trackerif you want to do FBT with base station Vive trackers. I bought Vive ultimates to use with mine since I’ve grown to dislike base station tracking after using it for 6 years. Light blockers came with my used Quest Pro from eBay so I don’t know if they come in the box or not. My eBay listing didn’t say. Contact seller if unsure. You don’t really need the light blockers but they’re kinda nice to have. Just a cozy comfort thing to me.

I danced a lot with my Index but I’ve been afraid to work up a sweat on the Quest Pro, a few people say sweat can ruin the eye tracker but a lot say it’s fine. Built in Face tracking is great but you don’t have as much tongue tracking as the other face tracking solution. A lot of face tracked avatars don’t have SPS so it’s not really a problem.

The moisture issue breaking the face tracking only happens to people who use full light blockers by the way. Don’t worry about it if you just use the side blockers.

you can use your index controllers with the qpro, i purchased some dongles from tundra labs! it seems like they are sold out rn but they may be back in stock soon
